I lost 3rwhp when I put one on my 355 compared to an open spacer. Every motor is different though.

It's on a chevy the specs i don't know, but he put a 1" open spacer under it & gained 10hp.He's after whatever HP he can get.I'll get the motor specs off him next time he's in the shop. Thanks for the quick reply OMN20.

the best way oldman is to put it on the dyno.

I went in with a 1" open, gained with the super sucker, gained more with a 2" open on the old engine

In my limited expereince nearly every engine will love a 2" open as it makes for more mixing of the air/fuel and gives it a chance to "turn the corner"

Its also good if the carbs a tad on the small side.

given the price of a sucker, its worth getting it on the dyno to make sure.

edit: If you believed all the ads, we'd all be driving 1000hp engines by the time you add up the hp claims from air cleaners, spacers, polarisers etc lol

greenhj, that's why I'm asking you ppl as I don't beleive all these adds. This car has just come back from Perth where it was on a dyno & he asked for a lot of different things to be tried & from what I can gather not all was tried & a lot of money spent on dyno time with in the end no start print out & no end print out.Not even an AF result.

that sucks. It seems some operators just like to thrash someone elses car without really putting the time in.

After all, the dyno is for testing things like spacers etc with proper evidence of gains/losses, without the paperwork, whats the point.

Can your mate borrow a spacer and go for a run up the strip?

Problem there is we,re around 600ks from perth that,s what really pisses you off,he sent the car to Perth & this is the result he got back.As far as I,m conserened a big waste of money. What makes it worse is it was to a suposed reputiable company,I believe that most of these places may know how to tune computorised cars but don,t have a clue about carbs.

i tried one in 2 inch size and couldnt get any seat of the pants or g tech improvement over a 2 inch open spacer personally. i think they are only good on a big open plenum as no much use on a dual plane

It's a different kind of spacer that in sum applications can add hp

when you can charge a grand to load a program in and tweak some of the variables, why would they fark about for half a day on a greasy old carb car that no one cares about.

This is the attitude I find amongst most "tuners" these days.

(before someone jumps on me about how hard it is to tune efi, theres plenty who do exactly what I described, after all, a cam change and exhaust on a stock engine will likely produce repeatable results when used with the same memcal/flashtune etc. There are always exceptions)

You being of "distinction" are probably dealing with kids half your age that dont know a thing about carbs, let alone how they work, its been 20 odd years since a factory engine had a carb on top and most of these "kids" wouldnt know a thing about making them work other than a blast at full throttle to check the mixtures and a quick spin of the dizzy to tweak the timing, ignore part throttle, accell. pumps, lash adjustments etc. Its the number that counts.

I dont know what theyre like over there but y'all need to find a tuner who does a lot of strip work with old cars to have half a chance, failing that Oldman, start renting yourself out to the young blokes to tune it when they have a squirt on the rollers.

sorry for the rant, but its like that here too!

(case in point, a local tuner with the biggest and baddest dyno in town told me to bump timing to 36 degrees on a holden to cure an idle fuel problem)

If youve got the original 2 BBL Manifold then tough.
If youve got the 4BBL Split plenum, the best performance improvement youll get is equalizing the plenum volumes. as Currently one side is always flows more than the other as One sits on top of the other. So porting the shallower side evens plenum volume that evens the airspeed and youll keep the torque you got and get a little more top end.

You wont match the top end of a open, but they wont get the torque you will either. All else being equal.

i have a 1in on the vk with a harrop single plain manifold i gained 10 hp but the actual throttle response picked up as compared to the open spacer that i had originally had as some have said will depend on the engine and whats happinging on the dyno

Thanks to you all for your responses. With the super sucker I don't from your responses he'll gain anymore from it as at present he has victor junior with a 1" heat shield spacer then a 1" open spacer toped by a 950 demon. What I've done is explain my mothode of tuning a carb & he's now going to try that, each time bringing a plug in to have a look at.Hopefully I can get time to go with him to Perth & spend a night at the strip fine tunning it.If i do I'll take my colection of bits & pieces with me.

Just abit of advice, if you do buy one, get the alloy one, the plastic ones melt to easy, 1 carb back fire and mine was melted.
