Default has anyone riden a KTM 300exc

Guys, i know this is a pretty specific question i dont expect to get much replies.

But has anyone riden one. Im considering upgrade to one, but am concerned that i wont be able to adapt to the two stroke in the bush, i.e climbing snotty hills and alike. Just dont know what the bottom end grunt will be on these. Other bike im considering is wr450f

Obviously i need to test ride one but its hard to gauge how a bikes going to perfrom in the bush by a quick crack up and down the street.

Any replies welcome

Cheers

Would really depend on what appeals to you and what suits your riding style 2 strokes are quite snappy with their power delivery though ktm uses heavier flywheels on the enduro series to stop them being mx agressive.
The four strokes are not quite as nimble in the bush but they are super smooth and user friendly if your coming off a wr250f and have enjoyed it I would be suggesting the 450f would be the go as they have heaps of grunt but it just rolls on rather than coming out of no where like a 2 stroke can sometimes feel like.
Having said that the 300 is widely regarded as one of the most fun and capable trail riding bikes on the market with a broad spread of power and a good dose of torque whilst still having the 2stroke buzz....

cheers cowboy, yes you are right thats why the 300 is calling me cos its light and flickable, and i looove the two stroke hit its one of the most awesome feelings, they sound mad and cant beat the smell of fully sinth buring. I used to ride a KX125 which was an absolute blast, when it hit band **** it was pure ecstacy lol. But no good in the bush too peaky.

Im reluctant to buy a high performance 4t cos if there buggered internally, your up for big dollars to rebuild. Where as 2t is piston, rings etc and bottom end bearings when it needs. Im looking at 03 04 models so the 4t's have a few miles on them buy now.

From what ive read the 300 is an awesome bike, but if you cant ride it properly then its gonna give you hell. Apparantly you can change power valve springs which will shift power delivery in the RPM range that you like.

If you get a KTM 300exc. a steering damper is the way to go. it will help with the head shake and overall stability.

Theres a few things you can do to take the edge off them and things i would be doing my bike if I were keeping it I ve got a 05 YZ250 the thing is fricking lethal, first thing is a flywheel weight the better ones are called steely and are available through ballards the second which also helps for out on the road is over gearing the bike by adding a tooth or 2 on the rear. They still retain the power but they dont have you wanting to take a break in the first 5mins cause its trying to rip your arms off.

The best thing is with a flywheel weight it gives you heaps of torque off the bottom to drive up hill climbs.

Your spot on about rebuild costs a four stroke will get rebuilt half as much but cost you at least 3 times the amount and you can pretty much forget rebuild the barstard yourself.

Its really got to do with your riding ability you know like I know now I would rather be on something less savage than the 250 as its crazy and probably too much bike for me but a 450f I would relish as it so much more controlable but end of the day I would be probably quickest through the bush on a KTM200exc cause it suits my style from riding old 125's, it would also be a good option for you if you feel the 300 might be too much that or the 250.
They are all good bikes in the ktm enduro range i would love to get one if i did get another bike but would suffer on any commuting I would be doing on it.

My first ever brand new bike was a 2000 ktm 300, WOW, i love two strokes, i had it for nearly 5 years, did about 5000kms, and i only changed the rings when i sold it so i could say "new piston and rings mate". my next bike i bought is a 05 Husaberg 450 (brand new at the time), mainly cause i just wanted "the button". But now of course the 300 has "the button" also with a wet/dry switch.
300's have heaps of torque and you don't need to ride it "on the pipe" to get places. saying that, the 450 is really good and quite different to ride.
at the end of the day its what u can afford, what colour u like and do u like 2t or 4t, these days all bikes are great!!!!!!
Sod.

P.S. i also looooooovvvvvvveee the smell of two strokes, mmmmmmmm........ twoooo strokes.

KTMs are brilliant, expensive but brilliant. On the other hand WRs have always been great. Im biased in the fact i hate 2 strokes so id say go the WR but if its just a weekend dirt blaster youre looking for, id say ride them both if you can and maybe even hire both for the weekend if you can and see what tickles your fancy more.

I rode a mates ktm 300 about 4 years ago and it was nearly brand new, i had not ridden anything super quick, i had a ktm 400, the 300 was a good light bike to ride, made mine feel like a bus, it had good usable grunt, but was more more than capable of turfing you off at any given time, anyway i liked it.
