Default whos good with home theater systems

Fellas, the families amplifier/reciever is playing funny buggers. Its a PIONEER VSX-D711. Its been playing up for a while and would keep switching on and off to standby mode, kind of cutting in and out. then the other day it gave AMP ERR and now it just wont switch on at all, goes onto standy by fine with the little red light on but if you press on it gives you SFA. Does this sound terminal or can be fix (worth fixing i mean)?

Cheers guys

ill have a ping, faulty overheat cutout.

When I give mine a huge caning, the amp gets so hot it switches off, its done to protect the vitals from burning out.

Some ventilation and a few computer fans fixed mine.

Will it run at all or is it farked completely? Do any lights shine when powers on? or you get nothing?

not sure mate, was really just a guess.

Mate if it were me, id pull the cover off and look for obvious burnt stuff, apart from that, unless youve got a CRO and more than half a brain (i dont have either lol) your pretty much stuffed.

Got any mates at school who are studying a related field? Might even be worth finding a teacher who knows his sh1t.

If it costs a bottle of p1ss its still cheaper than buying a new amp (maybe)

google the model number of the amp and be prepared to do some reading, when my tv crapped out after lots of searching i found out a lot about the particular foibles of the model.

yea mate, as greenhj said, pull the cover off and have a smell, put your nose right up to it and if there is something burnt out, you'll deffinitly smell it.

but to be honest, it aint sound too flash.

followed your lead green and googled PIONEER VSX-D711 switching on and off problem amp err came up with some interesting stuff.

Possible things could be,

1. blown internal fuse
2. loose wires at back creating short
3. loose wires inside
4. ****ed transformer
5. Some crap about speaker impedance but its been running for ages with these speakers so dont think its them.

Ill pull it sometime and will keep you posted.

PS. nah no one at school can help, ****s wouldn't give me the time of day anyway.

Cheers

wouldnt be loose wires or fuse, they wouldnt have that sort of effect, now you mention it, it seems like a power supply issue,
if ya got a multimeter, see if you can find what its output is meant to be, while you have the cover off, you could check that, there should be a red and black wire going onto the main circuit board, but remember not to touch anything while checking power.
obviously, keep power off/unplugged at all other times - i've learned my lesson once

throw it away dude, i had the same problem and checked all the above mentioned as i have been known to repair quite alot of things but took it to a repair man and found it was one of 2 control boards, both quite expensive and he said you change one then check it if not change the other. Thought there was no point in the end and bought another one, but yeah mine did exactly what yours did.

i did some searching also, faulty transistors causing the power supply current to go up and its tripping the overcurrent (designed to stop the power supply from cooking)

Whta did you pay for it and how old?

if thats the case its probably not worth fixing, a "decent" amp can be had for around 3/400 bucks, if youre not a home theatre nut it will do the job, besides if your gunna spend 2/300 (and im being generous, my repair bloke wants 110 bucks JUST TO LOOK AT IT) Your betta off putting it towards another amp.

(ie, my tv, 700 bucks and an hours work with 100 bucks parts, total bill blah blah 1580 big ones)

sad but true, most gizmo's aint worth fixing unless you know someone or have the brains to do it yourself.

stick it in the shed for a "one day" project, then if you find someone willing to fiddle with it cheap, youll have a good shed stereo or a spare for the bedroom etc.

hmm yes i am hearing you green. ill pass the info on to the olds cheers

its a shame really. was a good amp but i guess its done well, and the remote is rooted aswell so thats one more excuse to piss it off. We are not real hard core movie buffs, its just we cant watch dvds now cos the dvd is routed through the amp, plus the sound form the TV only is crap in comparision
