Default Stolen & Recoverd: Thanks to the internet

the thread is now 80 pages long.
great thing to browse over, unless you got a few days to read it properly
1991 skyline gt-r-stolen! calgary, ab - cash reward*pics of criminals inside* - Beyond.ca - Car Forums

overview:
newbie posts on a forum in canada that one of his cars were stolen (from his dealership)
infact was a gtr skyline
one member spots it, takes a photo of the driver and talks to him throught the window at the lights.
stolen car speeds off,
more sightings of the car, they end up finding out where he lives, and hes been driving like its his car and not stolen, just cruising down the steet.
many forum members get out at 2-5am driving round looking for the car, to his house, waiting for it to turn up.
eventually, the heat dies down.
the car turns up at the theifs house again, one user blocks the skyline in with his car, calls the cops, meanwhile posts on the forum his status via blackberry etc.
few more forum members, including the owner rock up to the house, sourround the car so it cant move. the owner calls the cops with the case number, the cops rock up 5mins later and arrest the 18yo kid.
pretty much, the thread grew in 30 pages overnight, from a photo, and the location of where the car was parked, the members had tracked down everything about the theif through the net,
his facebook, where he worked, who his girlfriend was, his name, school he went to, i think there was a phone number there too.

pretty much, the whole forum took the law into their own hands, until it was time for the arrest, when they let the cops do it, 48h later.

great stuff

I hope the lowlife 'slipped' and 'bumped his head' etc before the cops arrived, what with plenty of witnesses to testify what happened.

Ahh, the wonders of the net joining forces with proper justice. Is there anything sweeter? Combined with 76s slipped and hit head idea, now that would be perfect.

True, im wondering how addresses and phone numbers can be found on the net. I would have thought that kinda stuff would have been very hard to do. Its kinda scary to think that pretty much anyone can find out pretty much anything they want to about anyone.

and we're safer than the US, we dont have reverse searches, where people can put in a phone number and find out who they are/where they live
