Default Legalities of a locker

Is a locker diff illegal in victoria to use on the street? I don't mean a spool either Im talking about a proper locker that will work the same as a conventional open wheel diff when turning corners etc until drive is applied to it. I've broken my lsd centre and will be getting one put in so this doesn't happen again... any info would be appreciated. cheers.

Geoff,

I'll be honest with you, I don't know. I don't see why it would be illegal but who would know if you had one anyway. I've never been asked this question before. If you can have limited slips and mini spools, I don't see any reason why you couldn't have a locker. A lot of the traffic boys don't actually know things like that so you'd be right there.

I was under the impression that a spool or mini spool are illegal but a detroit locker is OK. Remember they were an option from the factory on some of the old muscle cars.

Now that I am at work, I have checked all of the Vehicle Regulations and the Australian Design Rules. I cannot find anything that would make anything of them illegal.
Under the Vic Roads Vehicle Standards Information guide to modifications, there is a very vague clause that states any modifications must not adversely affect the handling characteristics of the vehicle although stabiliser bars, torque rods and traction rods are approved general modifications.
Your guess is probably as good as mine although as I said earlier, how would they know. By the way, how did you blow the lsd in your VY?
Hope this helps.

one particular launch at heathcote with the slicks on i dropped the clutch at 6000rpm and heard an almighty bang from the rear of the car. the gears are fine so it kept going and i've been driving around on it but i took it to a mates diff joint to get it checked out because it was leaking oil since then. after they drained it and pulled the cover off they found some broken bits sitting in the diff housing from inside the lsd carrier. also the bearings are shot.

IN QLD it is legal to have a Locker (detroit)
but illegal to have a mini spool, full spool or a welded together centre.

You can tell it a person has a mini spool/fullspool etc as when reversing or turning a corner slowly it tyres cherp...althought not all police have knowledge about cars so they would not all know what to look for.

Besides the Phase III GTHO came from the factory with a detroit locker.

MANY 4x4's have lockers as well. If its ok for one class of car, it should be ok for all.

i think the ones you are talking about are an air locker.

these can be switched off, as opposed to a spool which is fixed all the time

I think here in W.A Detroits are Illigal, and Mini/full Spools are ok.

My Mate welded his diff and left a huge black mark up my drive way when he turned into it.

That doesn't sound right. I mini/full spool is constantly locked wereas a detroit works more like an ordinary diff (sort of ), it does unlock for corners if you are off the throttle.

welded diffs are a big no go. if you don't weld it right and it snaps it could lock the drive shafts up. its a lot safer to pay the $40 and get it spooled, its a s***load safer.

I wasn't totally sure, a mate has a Detroit and he claims it's illegal, and another mate has a Full spool in his XB and hasn't been in any trouble for it (after a full search coming away from the drags).

and that's a big reason why you should be looking for a W.A police rep to answer questions on this site

I Actually have a friend that I worked with a while back that is now a cop, but have no way of contacting him. He does infact, have an interest in cars, although they are 2 litres he has still had his fare share or Holdens, but has now moved on the ricers.
