Default Lifter noise on Startup

Hey peeps,

Is there anyway i can stop my lifter noise in my 308?
Only happens for 2 or 3 secs on startup but i thought being a hydraulic cam it should hold the oil up there hence limiting this lifter noise...

Tony.

If it only happens for 2 or 3 seconds I wouldn't worry too much. I've got a hydraulic cam and it does it as well. What grade oil are you using? Does it only do it after the ute hasn't been started for a while i.e left overnight? There is a nulon additive which a few people have used with good results.

I would recommend changing your oil to Castrol Formula R 25W50 after flushing the engine with Nulon Lifter Free. Magnatec isnt really suited to old school motors.

When I bought "Reg" the previous owner suggested I use a thicker oil to quieten down the top end rattle. I changed to Penrite HPR40 which is 25/70 which has made it noisier, so I reckon the thinner oil stomper recommended might help.

In a few weeks time I am going to pop the rocker covers off and see if the rocker &/or posts are badly worn. It seems to be one that is really bad so i might give the Nulon a shot before ripping into the valley to start replacing lifter, cam, etc.

The lifter free may make your engine sound a bit worse for wear initially, but as the crappy deposits free itself from the valvetrain it'll begin to quieten down. Although I wouldnt use the stuff on a really old motor.

I'll take the advice of you guys in WA and not rush into any additive before I do a bit of exploring. Thanks.
