    Default 304 Cam upgrade question

    Hello Gents,

I am about to do an engine conversion on my brothers Vh commodore, (was a 202, sliding in a efi 304) Anyhow while we have the engine out we where going to put in a new cam and lifters however I am having trouble picking a cam.

Its basicly a stock engine with an exhaust, standard 8.5:1 comp, standard banana manifold, 3.08 diff (will be looking at 3.45 maybe 3.7's in the future as the 6cyl diff wont last long I dont think), T700 auto stock convertor blah blah blah.

The cam wont be anything wild with these restrictions obviously but im still unsure of what to choose, if anyone has a stock 304 with just a cam swap and could share some power figures with me that would be perfect.

    So my questions are:

1: What would you personally recommend?

2: What is the highest lift at the valve before stronger valve springs are required.

3: Will the stock ecu handle a cam change? Been looking at getting one of the 185kw memcals off the internet.

4: Do you think this cam (stage 2) would give much of a boost over stock, the specs seem very mild. Im leaning towards these cams because of their pricetag and I currently run one in my 253 with no problems.http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-HOLDEN-EFI-DYNOTEC-HYDRULIC-CAM-AND-LIFTERS_W0QQitemZ140296955906QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU _Car_Parts_Accessories?hash=item140296955906&_trks id=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240 %3A1318

I know I have more questions and I will add them as I can think of them.

I would pick a cam from Crane, like Compucam H268 or Compucam H276 depending on if you want a stock idle. see http://www.cranecams.com.au/pdfs/hol...et_14-5-07.pdf page 4.

Crane has been around for a very long time and has a good reputation, your call.

I would go with the crane blueracer with 218 at 50th, .471 lift and memcal to suit.

I looked into this a while back before I went for a full custom top end and this bloke had some pretty good prices.

All I do is put it in neutral and rev like bam bam bam bam bam bam and then select D for maximum respect!!!!

    Okey doke,

Thanks heaps for the information it has definitely helped me narrow down what I will require. I have picked out these two cams but I have questions about both of them (See below)

Dynotec stage 2 ($170 posted with Speed Pro lifters) which is the
Equiv to Blue Racer Stage 1 (Replica of a 185kw - 215kw holden cam)
HYDRAULIC - Good idle, good low end torque
and throttle response. Works well with minimal
    modifications.
Equivalent to HSV 185i-215i cam. (92061394)
    BASIC RPM 1500-4000

Question 1: seeing as it only has .448 lift will I require stronger valve springs or can I get away with standard.

Question 2: Will the stock tune handle this cam?

Stage 2 blueracer (Same as Crane 284)-
HYDRAULIC - Fair idle with lope,
    range street and strip performance.
    autos with basic street modifications.
    BASIC RPM 2300-5300

Question 3: Will the stock tune handle this cam? I found 185kw memcals on ebay, I was thinking maybe these could work with it?

Question 4: Does anyone have a Crane 284 in their engine? If so what mods do you have and how much power are you making? Did it require a re-tune?

Sorry for all the novice questions but id really rather learn from everyone elses experiences then to fork out money and find out I have stuffed up.

    Default Built Simlar 304

I did a 304 upgrade stock motor done 240k USED crane cam H276 & ANTI-PUMP UP LIFTTERS, run in cam & found the comupter didnt like which i thought it would did like to idle & run nice, then upgaded the fuel pump
bosch 044, biggest injectors & a Haltek computer, crane HI6 ingition & sent it to the dyno to install to computer & dyno tune. It had & power
ifigure of 160rwkw & thats all dam it had lots more torque figures.
It cost a small bucket of about $4500. Wasn't happy but then fit NOS
now it hits 220rwkw and hit it a brick wall of power due to the stock manifold. Not bad for N/A stock motor with a small cam upgrade.
Now its waiting for & 355 with a massive cam & twin throttle body &
power figures should see over 300rwkw on NOS
My way would be bolt a super charger it's just better more power for BUCK

If you are using a banana manifold, Greenfoam (from SC, does memcals etc) has just bought a wade i think it is, that is split duration, 204/213, with plenty of lift, and will get the best out of a banana manifold

Sometimes answering the questions does not give you the answers.

How many kmh has this 304 done? Valve springs do go soft with age and mileage.

Which computer are you running VN ?

The most important thing is to get the chip calibrated for your car, you are changing the weight of the vehicle, a cam change and planning a diff change. If you get the calibration done properly you will not need Haltek, bigger injectors, pump etc, sorry DR327VK.

If you cannot get a KALMAKER “expert” to do the tuning for you I suggest you get the stage one cam.

    Hay Pungent,

Where were you going to purchasing your memcal from? Does anyone know if off the self memcals are available for mild cams? I know crow does cam and memcal and cam kits but I honestly cant justify the price of them.

    Thanks mate

Email the above link and they do a blueracer cam and lifter package with memcal to suit. Was a very good price they gave me.

For what it is worth for a set of LT1 springs ($80) put a set on with a set of $22 hardened collets. Money well worth spending.

i wouldnt recommend putting a CAM in a stocko without a ecu change, just do exhaust and cold air

As he said ^^^^^^^^^^^^. When I pulled the cam out of my VR I thought it was standard as to the way it ran but found it had CRANE markings on it but had a stock memcal. Who ever changed the cam before I brought the car wasted there cash IMO.

So the basic conclusion is that I shouldn't run a cam with out a tune. The thing is the reason the cam change is due is because we have a noisy lifter that needs to be replaced and thought we may as well throw in a small cam while we are at it, We will get a memcal / kalmaker tune for it eventually when it goes onto the road but will it still be ok to start up and move around the yard and things? Will it hurt the engine just putt putting around?

Pugent: You said that you removed a cam from your vr and you thought it was stocko because of how it ran, Could it of posibley been just a towing cam or some very close to stock.

The Dynotec cam I want to run is of very close specs to a crane H268 Which is the same cam Hsv used in the 200kw sv5000i's only difference is the 200kw sv's ran 9:1 comp, exhaust and memcal. So its mild but should hopfuly give a slight gain.

    2nd hand commodore - $1000
    set of chasers - $100
    welded diff - $20
the look on their face when approaching sideways - Priceless

More than likely it was a stock replacement cam or as you said a tow cam or something along those lines. IMO if your going to the trouble of changing a cam you may aswell put something that you can notice in. But at the same time it does cost extra for a memcal so $$ may make the difference.
