G'day all, has anyone tried extension on the end of their extractors while racing their car at the track.
If so , was there any HP/Torque gain or loss. Did the car improve/lose over any areas of the 1/4 mile. If i get the time this sunday i will experiement with a pair that i made up about 15 inches long and will cut them after ive done a few passes to the correct length after i ve seen the the burn length. Any input would be great ! Cheers

Im in the process of learning about complete extractor design and from what i understand, its very complicated and in depth. The lengths and diameters, as well as the positioning of collectors and pipe lengths are all dependent on the application.
Revs? HP? Where it makes power? Head info? Cam specs? All of these need to be considered. How did you decide on a 15 inch extension? |

I understand that every engine and car is different so some say it made a differerence some say it done nothing , all depends on the quality and length of the extractors to begin with.

I made a thread here and got some good info.
Ask Paulzig to run your combo through his computer program. It seems quite good and has a lot of information, but ill be running my info through my engine builders program to compare results. We will be building mine from what the computer generates to fingers crossed .Custom headers and some questions |

There is always the low Tech way too.
Put a line of burnable paint along the pipes. Where it stops burning off. Cut the pipe at that point. Sorry Pro, disregard I read your Q properly the second time.

I tried the burning paint thing on my Chrysler once.. Put the paint on went for a run, measured where it burnt off. Let the thing cool, wiped off paint with thinners and repainted the line... Went for another full throttle run and the line burned off in a different spot this time by a few inches.. So where do I cut it?? If it really worked wouldnt the line burn off at the same spot every time??
On a 4-1 system the collector makes more of a difference than the primaries to some extent. Do you have off the shelf pacemakers or custom pipes?? If you're around 500-520 HP or so Start of with around 17 inches of collector... and 1 7/8" primaries about 32 inches long equal length.. Diameter of collector also makes a difference and 3 inches or so might be OK for yours.. Give me all the details like 532man posted on the thread he linked to and i'll run yours thru the puter if you like mate.. Pipemax is a really cool computer program, a lot of the top US engine builders are using it to get parameters for not just extractors but for other engine components too... Not trying to sell it, I just like the info it provides ![]() |

Yeah, i cant lay claim to any of that insight, just parroting what you told me when I asked in my thread!
The main thing is, it sunk in, hence my reply above. |

Forget the burning paint bullshit
The longer collector will help the torque curve and especially help a heavy car off the start line. Pipemax would be the best way to work it out...

Thanks for all the info and help guys, it will be the first race on the fresh combo, i expect the car will go the same and hopefully not faster than 11.00 as i dont have a cage. If i get time to try the extensions and do a back to back run i will.
Just want the car consistent for the excessive shootout in November. ( car has always been pretty consistent ) Cheers
