Default 165kw upgrade

I'm new to the Holden EFI V8 & feel stupid asking this silly question but,

Is it possible to upgrade a 165kw VN with a VT 195kw memcal & injector's to gain the same output?

Or just upgrade to a 185kw SS memcal?

Also I've got a long term project in mind to have a low 12sec streeter but retaining the 304 as I liked the revvy nature of my last 304 & banana manifold & wondering what sort package would be ideal?

Already have a nice auto & 3.45 gear's but don't really want to go any bigger than a 3000 convertor, as I do a 3hr round trip for work

I was thinking
10.8:1
Head's cleaned up
Injector's
Tune. Who in Melb. would you recommend?
Crane 286, 272, 280-2 or something else
Extractor's, twin cat's, 2.5" into a single 3"

No the ECM (computers) are different, as are the EPROMS.

No - Be careful with this. Some models had knock sensors. If you fit a chip that requires a knock sensor and it is not present, the program will sense this as a knock sensor failure and remove ingition advance up to 10 degrees.... RESULT Major loss of power.

Never done it myself though but a cheap ass way ive heard of is people putting car in limp mode & setting the timing to 12 degrees or even up to 14 degrees, then have to run premium all the time...sounds bit dodgy aye.

If you can get 185 memcal cheap use it BUT don't forget as said above you need a knock sensor & the wire to the ecu..also that it will work with your bcm,vats..most dont.

In Melb; talk to MCE Comp or COME for your engine options...

Thanks fella's

Info I needed to know. Really appreciate it.

Might just go a cold air intake for the time being & save some coin to go all out later on.

When setting the igition timing, what are the two pin's that have to be bridged out & on which plug?

Cheers

If you want to do it that way dude bridge pins 5 & 6 on the connector if its a vr/s

if its a vn use this link/picture.

also, use good fuel & make sure it doesn't ping...ive never tried it,we just used a 185 memcal on my bro's vs ute instead.

Thanks matey.

I only wanted to know, as I've just done a major service & wanted to check the timing to make sure everything is 100%.

I'm not going to crank the timing up, justed wanted to know for interest sake.

Cheers

remember, if u go the 185i memcal, u will also need similar spec exhaust to the HSV, aswell as airbox to. those things together is what gave it the whole extra 20kw. ihave a VP SS that i have done nearly every bolt on mod to. its making 152rwkw and its not for torque, not straight out power. if u want any hints, let me know and ill see what i can help ya with.

Cheers Pumba.

Anything tip's & trick's are most welcome & far better than nothing.

I was thinking of putting on the CAI & VS airbox.

It's already got the standard header's, but not sure which ones. It's not the cast manifold's though.

I had a look see & came across these. I'm sceptical, but am wondering if anyone has any experience with this sort of stuff

certainly hope that the first ebay ad memcal works, as i have the guy making one atm. he's setting it up to utilise the waggott 737 cam i've just installed and i'll fit it with blue top injectors once the memcal comes back (just running standard memcal and black tops atm)

anyway, seems like he knows what he is talking about, his feedback is good. may just be the case of some1 who isn't all about making $$$ and ripping ppl off.

cheers,
brett

that first memcal is done by a bloke called 'greenfoam'. from what i have read, and heard form a few people, his tunes arnt that bad, althought personally, i would rather spend theextra money and get it dyno tuned. there are so many variables that can go wrong when it comes to a 'one size fits all' tune. the only real way to tune is to do it on a dyno. i got one of them 'off the shelf' tunes years ago to see how it would go, and i lost power... i was loosing to stock V6 commodores... seriously, save the moeny and put it towards a porper tune.

my shit box

take a look at that thread. thats my VP, and it has listed everything i have done. keeping in mind, before i got it tuned, it was making less then 170rwhp... so its a tired old motor. i have done nearly every bolt on posible for the old 304ci. next step is to wack in another set of diff gears, some LT1 valve springs (stock items dont like revvign to 5500+rpm lol) and up the tune abit more agressivly and see hwo it runs then

greenfoam asked for all my setup, so i think it would be fair to think that he is building a tune to pretty much what i require. i'll give you kudos that a dyno tune would be the best option, but for the price of a spare v6 auto memcal i had laying around and post of about $7, i think i'll give it a try.

cheers,
brett

if you want to try out a chip cheaply give greenfoam a go for a stocker or mild budget motor.
if youre willing to spend the money then D i c k s's Electronics, can't recommend him enough if your in NSW to tune a hipo set up,he wont give your car back in a few hours like most so called tuners.
