Both. You take your crownwheel off the open centre you have now, and change it onto an LSD centre that you must acquire.

i have done this, it's very easy just do what is said above, put it back in and check the back lash. make sure the centre you get is 3.08, 3.36, 3.55 or 4.11 as the ratio's under 3.08 have different centres

Is a mini better than an LSD?
When you have a mini does that mean one wheel can not turn different than the other when going around a corner? Do you find this anoying, and does it wear out tyres quicker?

For streetdriving an lsd centre is better to use but more expensive to get, rebuild & will still eventually wear when it starts single wheeling so most people will get a mini spool because they are only $100,a spool locks both up 100% of the time, not that bad to drive if your careful even in the rain & aren't an idiot...downsides are dirty looks by snobs or getting pulled over when the tyres squeal when turning a corner or trying to park, snapping axles can be the annoying part.

People are starting to use the lokka centres, locks up with power on,disengages power off, apparently the cheaper quieter version of a detroit locker diff...$600 though

A mini spool is about $100,it goes into the centre replacing the spider gears of a single spinner centre, just cheaper than a full spool & which is stronger, cost more. The full spool($400ish) you take out the old centre & bolts the diff gear onto it basically, they both lock the wheels up 100% of the time no give.Look them up on one of the diff company websites to see the difference.

A 'lokka'($600ish) that is the brand name, its like a cheaper detroit locker. When you touch the accelerator it locks up & when you back off it disengages back to like a single wheeler so that you can turn corners without the chirping or bouncing etc,if you have throttle on while turning it will still have both axles locked up,most people don't like the noise from the ratcheting noise engaging/disengaging or turning corners etc.

A spool stops your differential from working (i.e. providing any differential action at all). A pain in the arse if you want to drive around corners, and unsafe on wet or bad road surfaces. Good if you want to do burnouts or get minimum slip in a straight line.

Get a detroit locker or similar (Lokka etc), will be much better than a LSD and safer / more practical than a spool.

Snapping axels are some of the negatives but you can also snap the studs because of the extra pressures of turning which means your rear wheel will overtake you. (happened to a friend before).

If you have a leaf spring setup i wouldn't be doing it either, they tend to 'walk' on the springs and rubbing on the guards is a known problem cause the diff moves around alot when trying to corner.

Spools are great for burnouts, drag cars and drifting as you know you have both wheels going 100% of the time.
