I'm in the process of replacing a 308 with a VS 5.0l pursuit motor in an FJ45 Cruiser ute. After much reading and head scratching, I'm still trying to sum up the best option for wiring/ecu. I'm sticking with manual Cruiser gearbox but the donor VS has auto ecu. Should I persevere with this wiring loom and ecu or bite the bullet and go manual vn loom and ecu???

You can use the vs auto ecu if you you know a good tuner who can disable the auto codes & vats etc...might as well mod the engine lol.Nah,on either of the commodore sites look up the username greenfoam,he can burn your chip for $50 to get you up & running.
vn ecu is easier to use, wire it up & go if you just want to use the standard engine & memcal. |

Grab yourself a VN/VP harness and computer mate, I wouldn't even consider VS/VR auto because exactly as gtrboyy said, you have to spend extra getting a chip made without the security imobiliser crap on it and the auto gearbox stuff. Even with a VS/VR manual loom, you would still need to have a custom chip made to deal with the imobiliser.
A VN/VP manual or auto harness will do you fine because vn/vp auto's weren't computer controlled, had no immobiliser (except for some vp's but it was just a key switch), and you will not need a custom chip made up. I think the engine harness for vn/vp auto & manual might even be the same??? Also I think the only fiddly bit you will need to do if you use a vn/vp harness and keep your existing manual box is use a piggy back style speed sensor. That way, you can run your speedo cable and the speed sensor for the efi computer. I may be totally wrong here, but I think for some reason the efi computer needs to know what speed the car is doing??? Somebody correct me if I am wrong with this please.

TRy contacting greenfoam off the commodore first dude, think his ebay username is nicefrog. You can get it to work with the vs ecu etc, just more labour if your doing it all yourself instead of spending more to get another ecu & harness...vs is a better memcal to use anyway.

I sent greeny a pm the other day but so far no reply. Must be a busy fella. What are the memcal tunability advantages with the VS? To sum things up, at the moment, it looks like either VN harness and memcal (around $500 depending on if and where I can get them from) or VS memcal ($50 "maybe" or about 2 months of my spare time to work out how to reprogram eprom). I reckon I'm leaning towards hitting greeny with every means of messaging I can find. RIBBIT!! RIBBIT!!

LOl..heaps of dudes over running him wanting their memcals done, think its easier to get him through ebay so he can keep track more easily than just having peeps say 'yeah,do me a chip blah blah' then not get back to him.
I got to remember one day to send a memcal off to him for my mate's ute too. |
