Hi all, i am new to the forum and recently new to the v8 world. I own a vs series ii 5 litre ute and i think i may be up for a new clutch in the near future as it only works late on the pedal and is nearly at max adjustment on the cable. i have heard that there is a possibility that there is two types of gearboxes in the vs utes (one being a getrag). i have also been told that the getrag clutch is ridiculously expensive and i am curious to know how i find out what box is in the car. if anyone has any information that may be able to shed a little light on the situation it would be greatly appreciated. Also i wont be doin the work myself most probably and if anyone can recommend a deent mechanic in ipswich or surrounding suburbs that would be extremely helpful

I am not sure of the top of my head with the V8s but if you have a look here
Gearboxs I have pictures of a VS v6 Getrag and A VR v6 T5 which if you can have a look at whats in your ute it should give you a rough idea as to what you have. The Getrag clutch in the V6 is expensive because for some of them you have to buy a new flywheel with the new set up. By the way you could also have a stretched cable which will give you the same sort of problems. Cheers Paul. |

you said that you have the series II
any V8 later (and including) VS II and Pre VT II (not including) had the Getrag 280 so in saying that, I have reson to believe, you in fact have the money eating getrag gearbox edit: okaaaaay.. so im wrong.. ignore what i said above

You say the "cable" is at max adjustment, leading me to believe it may well be a T5.
I always thought all Getrags behind V8's had a hydraulic clutch, and t5's had cable. Simple way to tell, does your gearstick have linkages connecting it to the gearbox, or does the gearstick come straight out of the top of the box? Linkages mean its a Getrag, gearstick coming straight out of the box, its a borgwarner T5.

i just went down to the ute and had a quick look and it would appear that the shifter comes out of the top of the box (no linkages). so luck might be on my side and it should be the t5 according to the information supplied by you guys. It will be getting a new clutch in the next few weeks and most probably be in the for sale section within the coming weeks/months. it will be a shame to see it go but i must make room for a more family oriented vehicle. Thanks so much for the fast replies guys and the information, it has been a huge help.
Cheers |
