Default clean up after cam lobe wear

when i first started playnig with V8's one of my first toys was a uc torana under hood was a tough little 253 yellaterra heads flat top pistons polution blue motor, it was built good. good enough for me to keep the motor when the body rusted away.
i loaned it to my bro who thought he would change the lifters cause it was noisy when it was cold, this ending up chewing a few lobes and i took it back.
t's time to clean it up, do i have to pull it back down to the bare block and clean or just drop the oil out put in new cam and oil.

At least your pulling the manifold off, the minimum you must do is wash the hell out of it and flood it with kerosene. Although I worry about the debris in the oil galleries and the oli pump. If it drove some distance, you'll already have shrapnel deposited in the bearings and quite often on the piston skirts, if the engine is a reasonable engine just pull it out and pull it down. If you dont care about it, just wash it up as best as you can.

quick 'n dirty

put on a new purolator or pure one oil filter and do an oil change using a heavy duty diesel lubricant

attach an old magnet off a microwave or speaker to the closed end of the filter, silicon it or just let it self adhere

change oil and filter early and cut filter open with a hammer and wood chisel. when it comes up clean in the filter media pleats you can just leave the magnet off, although i leave it on "just in case"

this is what i did when my hd shat a roller lifter 40,000 k's ago, works a treat
