Default Ok, here's my problem, New diff housing, wrong uni's on my tailshaft..

I've been asking in another topic, but thought someone new might have some more info for me.

My new diff housing is from (supposodly) a HQ statesman. That was good, since I it's going into my HQ statesman, but the flange at the front of the new diff, is to fit a smaller uni joint cup, whereas my old diff, and my current tailshaft have the larger uni joint cups.

Now my problem, I've got a new uni joint from coventrys with the correct size cups, but wrong size cross. Does anyone know somehwre in Perth that sell the uni's with the correct size cross, and the smaller type cups?

Another problem I might have, is the 2 cups that sit in the actual tailshaft would still have to be the same size (larger cups), So really what I would need is a cross, that will fit 2 smaller cups (for the pinion flange), and 2 larger cups (for the tailshaft). Is there a such a part? If not, I'll have to change tailshafts, which could be another problem, can a tailshaft from a turbo 400 fit into the turbo 350?

Is it a 9 inch or a salisbury?

You can swap the yokes over but the degree if difficulty is going to depend on your centre. I had the same situation.
One type (cant remember which) you could just unbolt the front and change yokes (which I had luckily), the other type required the centre to come out as it had a crush bearing or something that had to be pulled and reset after you changed yokes.

Check with whoever built the diff in this case.

When you refer to the yoke, do you mean at the diff end or gear box end? I can't change over the cross due to the 2 diffrent sized cups that are needed to bolt to the diff. the tailshaft has the big cups, and the diff has the small cups, so I need a cross that has both on. I went to Repco and they had nothing, I read somehwere that rare spares might do something like it?

Oh and it's a sailsbury.

Try a place called "Hardy Spicer" 02 96006333 they have a online catalogue that shows you pictures of the different types etc.etc. They do mail order.
I think the part you are after is a "Crossover" uni. with a part number of
RUJ-2034
This worked for me when matching a large yoked one tonner diff and smaller sized stato taillshaft. I sounds like you have the reverse problem but I think it will work. just make sure that you have the U-bolts that fit

As 400 said swap the Yokes. I had to do this on the Tonner's 10 Bolt when I converted the small yoke on the sedan diff to large one for the Tonner tail shaft.

What I did and have done before with no problems is, put a mark the nut and the shaft on the diff with a centre punch next to each other. This is so you will know how tight to do it back up. Make sure it’s the nut and shaft you mark not the uni.

Now get a big F%#k off shifter with the tail shaft removed and diff still in the car. Slip the shifter over the yoke behind where the U bolts do up. Rest the shifter on the concrete to stop the yoke spinning.
You will require a 1 1/8 inch socket for Holden 10 Bolt, using a breaker bar and a length of pipe undo the nut with some one holding the shifter steady so it does not slip sideways under strain. These things are tight, so be careful.

Once the nut is off, slip off your old Uni and put the new one on. You might as well change the seal while your there.
Do the nut up to align the two centre punch marks and your done.

I tries getting the original yoke of my diff a few weeks back, with a rattle gun and boy it was a ****, my new diff is already in the car, and rusted as ****. That nut will be very hard to get out. Then theres the problem of getting the yoke off, it's on a taper, so it's tight like a tiger, I need a special tool. It'd be so much easier to just get the uni joint that adapts to both these set ups. I've heard of the 'crossover' uni, but don't know where to get one from in Perth so I can suss it out personally.

Edit; I think everagejoe might have it, I fount the part on their catoulge, And I'll ring them tomorrow, or monday about it. They have a branch over here so hopefully I don't have to order on the net. Cheers you're a champ.

Yeah right, that's really strange since the diff I've got out (my original), the only thing left on it was the pinion and yoke, I got the nut undone and started hitting the pinion through with a big punch and hammer, and I still havn't got the **** off.

5litre, if you have trouble finding a uni to adapt, i have a large yoke on a spare diff at home that you can have as long as you can send yours to replace it. I'll never use the large yoke. I you require this PM me before wednesday as i have to go back to work on thursday for a couple of weeks.
To remove yoke do exactly as COOPHT said. Leverage will be heaps better than a rattle gun.

Just an update, Averagejoe was on the money. went to Hardy Spicer today and asked for that part number. apparntly its for a 9" conversion, but worked for this also. So if anyone knows someone with the same trouble, this crossover uni will do the trick perfectly. Cheers.
