Hi
My 253 is starting to get a real issue spray oil onto my extractors on the right hand bank. I need to replace the sump seal with a neoprene unit (maybe also the rocker cover seals as well as i'll need to retune it soon). I really don't want to lift the motor to get the sump out. Can this be done without getting an engine hoist in? I have a hydraulic trolley jack and axle stands. Any advise on the change over? It is QR810254 number on the block so it sounds like a HZ 253 block. Will i need a new rear main seal? Cheers Chris Oh dear the parts list is growing to get to roadworthy!! Should be able to do the gasket easy enough. Might have to lift the engine slightly for extra clearance. Neopren gasket might be a bit tricky as there one piece but should be able to slip it over the outside of the sump carefully one end at a time I guess. Not sure if you can get enough to get the sum off to do the rear seal though. What car is it in?

It's in a HZ ute 1978 which was originally a 3.3 litre. I can get the car onto axle stands first but i want to lift the motor using the jack somehow. I heard the neoprene were much better than the original style ones. I'm not fussed about the rear seal. Just as long as it doesn't get screwed up when the sump pan drops out.

Sure why not?

In an HZ it is possible to change the sump by lifting the motor a little, but the problem is this is still quite difficult and you'll probably end up with the new gasket leaking because its so hard to install. If you have a lot of patience it might work OK but unfortunately the best way is usually to remove the engine (doesn't take long with a mate to help and something to lift it). The one-piece gasket is definitely better.

Cheers for that - so best not to try an easy fix and stuff it up. Where is best to get the seal? I keep looking on rare spares but their site could do with a better setup. Maybe investing in a hoist would be a good idea!
