Default hq steering lock

FOR THE LIFE OF ME, I CANNOT SEE HOW TO REMOVE THE IGNITION BARREL FROM THE STEERING COLUMN

you've been good enough to explain it to me, but i cannot see a 'half moon piece' to depress

quote ( gregory hq hj v8 book page 139 item 6 )

"using a suitable probe through the slot provided in the turn signal switch housing, depress the spring latch and withdraw the ignition and steering lock cylinder"

WHERE THE FECK IS THE SLOT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT ???????????????????????????

i'm at my wits end now, this is really rooting my boot

OK I've just smashed one up to take some pics. It's out of a UC/LX Torana but I'm pretty sure they're all the same. It looks to me like it's a one-way thing though, I don't see how to remove it without breaking it. I suppose that doesn't matter if you're planning on replacing the barrel?

I smashed the centre out of the lock barrel so I could see what I was doing, then ended up smashing the barrel out too. This rendered the lock useless but I'm pretty sure you could do this without damaging the housing easily enough (aside from the bent pin this one could be reused). You can see a little half moon piece that sits in the hidden side of the barrel and engages in a groove in the housing, this is what retains the barrel. I couldn't see any way of removing it without breaking things.

All of the pics of the housing are upside-down.

That torana one does not look the same, you have to take your indicator section out, the slot is in the housing section on top meaning you should be looking straight down on it, just judge how far the new barrel would go in, in relation to the half moon locker and you should see a small thin slot. Breaking the turn piece off will not help in removing it. If you don't do any good I have to take my horn cover off tomorrow in the morning and will post a pic.

bugger, I know the HZ/HX one is but obviously not HQ - I thought it might be because the LX has the earlier indicator stalk

got it

for those of you silly enough to have followed this thread and want to know, this is what i did

assuming the steering wheel and wiring assy etc is removed, you should be left with the steering lock housing

looking at it from the drivers seat, there is a rectangular verticle slot about 3/4"x1/8" in about the 1 o'clock position

with the key installed, push a small thin bladed electrical screwdriver into the slot in about the middle. this should press down on the spring loaded barrel retainer

as you push down, wiggle and pull on the ignition key and "ears" of the lock. mine was especially difficult and needed a large flat bladded screwdriver to assist levering out the lock

once the barrel is out, the plastic cog is given a sharp rap with a screwdriver towards the hole the lock came out of and the replacement is fitted

reassembly SHOULD just be a reversal of the above, i'm about to try it

thanx to all involved, johnny

Hey, that's a revelation! The part in the pics I posted above is the same, just that the slot was covered over (not fully formed/cut) - a bit of a push with a knife cut through the very thin layer of alloy and opened it up.
