There is no way to tell unless you pull the sump off to see what crank it has all clevo blocks are the same externerly.

You have to remember these engines are 25 plus years old so if they have the same crank in them is highly unlikely.

A "mate of mine" lol

Anyway, he drops a real small sinker on some string down the plughole and measures the stroke. Not super accurate but you should see a 1/2" difference.

Just dont lose the sinker or its heads off and one unhappy owner...

Is it a cleveland or windsor?

If its a windsor then theyre taller than a 302.

If its a clevo you can do as greenhj said... but I wouldnt use a sinker because you could lose it in there. Use a straw or something that wont break or fall in there. Theres a difference in stroke between them with the extra cubes.

Iv'e seen thin gauge wire inserted into spark plug hole at BDC to check rough length of stroke.

Inlet manifold width the absoute give away, Wider in the valley in Clevos.
Taller decks in the windsor motors.
and if you lift the breather cap and look into the rocker, the 302s in standard form had a round rocker falcrum ball and he clevo a rectangular.

Telling 302 windsors and 351 windsors apart , thats another matter. Lucky theyre not common unless you had a 60s American galaxy or fairlane and so on.

I wouldnt know mate, ive no need to slow down an aircraft carrier by lobbing one overboard so I dont pay much attention.

I thought a 51 windsor was an inch taller in the deck more than an 02

Clevo externally identical

Yes, a 302 and a 351 cleveland are EXACTLY the same block, there is no way to tell externally (other than the measuring the stroke thing) but you'de have to ask some mates who have a 302, then a 351 if you can test their donks first then go check the motor you're looking at... Alternatively the engine number is a good place to look, thought it may not be an origional crack who would de-cube an engine with a smaller crank, that's a shooting offence where I come from.

Nifty trick below...

When you register your car with a 302 engine number you can stroke it to a 383 and constable plod cant tell from checking the engine externally... Like I have... Sweeeet!

pull the front left side plug out put the piston up to top dead centre take a long thin screwdriver mark it next to a point on the motor as a reference point rotate the crank BY HAND to bottom dead centre insert screwdriver gently to top of piston mark using the reference point withdraw and measure the stroke easy
