Default Hello All

Ive just joined, after being directed here by a freind.
I have a 1971 xy 302 cleveland.
I have had some issues with lifter noise, and apparently rocker studs are over tight.
Im wondering what you think is the best way to go with this engine from here, and i will give you my ideas.
looking to change the manifold to dual plane edelbrock, and put 600 holley on,electronic dizzy, extractors(any help with the best brand to go for would be appreciated) and a set of yellaterra roller rockers.

302s r good motors but is a 351 a viable option for u? the only reason i ask is coz u can go so much further and easier (powerwise) with the bigger motor.

I agree, change the crank and rods and make it a 351 or better yet build a stroker.

Welcome to the site Brewster, nice XY you have there.

I think you are on the right track for a mild cruiser, with the dual plane manifold, 600 Holley, electronic dizzy and extractors. I would suggest going with a set of try-y extractors for your application and a twin 2 and a 1/4" exhaust for a good cruising note.

If the engine is in good nick then maybe all you need is a good tune up.
I may be able to help if you can't find someone with cleveland experience.
I have that in spades.
Russ.

Cool 302 go

Heya, first go buy destruction manual for xy or similar, first thing i would check seeing as it is rebuilt is rocker preload, its simple, take rocker cover off and bring rocker to closed on number 1 cyl, intake and exhaust, loosen off rocker then retighten,u should get 1 full turn of preload at 35 pound tension, quite often the head has been shaved to far, shims can be made from rocker oil splash plates if you cant buy any,but not the ones you are using lol.,i would also get heads mild ported, there is heaps of info on that on the net,but doent let temptation let you go to far, bigger is not always better.also advancing timing can help, easily done just move a little and take off in second,if it pings bring it back a lil and try again, use premium fuel aswell, there is tons u can do but only so much space lol, duel plane is good, try y's yeh, elect diz yeh,600 good all rounder but if you are chasing more down low than top end 465 on 302 is good,2 1/4 is good and sounds excellant.let us know how you get on.

russxr67, the engine is in good condition,it would not have had 6mnths of solid driving since rebuild, but there is definately one or more damaged lifters,so we have re assessed and decided to do away with the standard rocker gear, and replace the lifters, and as you all probably know, once you start pulling things off,its not hard to go 'while im at it I might as well add this, and this and this!" lol,and I have found a semi retired fellow who used to have a shop near malaga, and he seems to know his stuff,so I was considering him for the work.its hard to find a good mechanic, with experience on the older fords, when you have just moved to a new place,so if you know someone id be glad for the tip.thanks!
v8fordrx7 thanks for your tips,i had my step dad on the phone trying to relay instructions to my o/h last week to do exactly what you just explained, but you explained it alot easier! and we are lucky to have the original workshop manual for the car, very old and hard to get hold of apparently, but not much it doesnt tell you.
If anyone knows of anywhere around perth thats a good place to buy the parts Im after, please let me know, having a quick look online, theres sometimes a big difference in dollars depending where you go.
Thanks again.

No worries Brewster. I have been doing cleveland builds for the last 20 years. My last was my own 383 stroker cleveland that made over 560hp with a flat tappet cam.
If you need help just holler.
Chris Mills is a good place and reasonably priced too.
