Default Ford 302 Cleveland Distributor

Hi,

I've been convinced for the past 3 months that I have a Windsor motor.... but as far as I can see, it's actually a Cleveland...

This has left me with a slight problem, I was planning to install a new distributor... Will one for the 351 cleveland fit?

Thanks,
Leon

The 302 Cleveland was made only in Australia, and is simply a 351 Cleveland with shorter stroke, so I'd reckon the distributor from a 351 should fit.

If your thermostat is on the manifold it is a Windsor, if it is sitting in front of the manifold bolted to the block it is a Cleveland. that is the easiest way of visually telling them apart.

Thanks

My thermostat is definitely in the block... Now I wonder if the 302 Cleveland was assembled in South Africa as well, or if this engine is all the way from Australia

I know South Africa shared a lot of components (and cars) with Australia, not sure whether the engines went complete or not, but the blocks are most likely cast in Australia.

yeah, I'm pretty sure the block is Australian... A lot of the components have "Made in Austalia" stamped one them

What are the chances that my 302 Cleveland is actually a 351?

the only way u gonna find that out is if u pull the sum off and see if there is a 351 stamped on the crank . A 302 and a 351 cleveland have the same block so with the first question on the dissy , there might be a far chance that dissy is gonna work

I need to give her a good service, so I might as well pull the sump and have a look.

I'll check the dizzy I have in now, and see if that is the same as the 351

Its also the same as a 460 distributor.

On the blocks though there are two size for the dizzy shaft. Early and late block as well here in OZ.

Just out of interest....

I bought a Pertronix Flamethrower for a Cleveland 351 and it fits like a charm, and apparently it will fit both hole sizes

Thats because it must be machined to suit thye later block. In an earlier block it wil be a sloppy fit.

You can also pull a spark plug out and measure to bottom dead centre, surely someone will know the specs, I think 302 is 1/2 inch shorter than 351? Anyone know?
