Do'in a rebuild on a WB styleside ute and i am retaining the salisbury diff at the moment due to $$. I want to know how many different axles/centers there and which ones suit higher horsepower applications and if the housings are different as this one has 24 spline with a 2 pinion center. I just want a reliable diff to handle 300 odd HP without going to the extent of a 9". Any info on what fits what would be great.

Sure why not?

Sounds like you're looking at a small Salisbury with 23 spline axles and 2 spider centre (same basic gear as Banjo in a better housing). Find a large Salisbury with 28 spline axles and much beefier centre and gearset, these were factory on the V8s and are quite a strong diff, should be easiest to find one for a ute. These have a physically larger housing so you need the whole thing to swap over.

As above, HQ-WB V8 ute or van. Get the tailshaft too, or if not a tailshaft from a HQ-WB 3speed, 4speed or timatic V8 ute, van, wagon or Statesman. You can also use a 6cyl or V8 1-tonner diff but the yoke on the diff is bigger than a normal V8 tailshaft and will need an adapter uni.
Easiest way to fit it is to remove the axles from your WB and leave the brakes attached to the car. Slip in the V8 salisbury minus brakes and axles, slip your brakes on, put the salisbury axles in, put tailshaft in and add diff oil. Easily done using a pair of car stands in 4 hours. When you get a replacement tailshaft, take it to get new unis fitted first and get it's balance checked. Last edited by HK1837; 08-02-2010 at 08:35 AM. |

One issue with the Salisbury's is that parts are getting hard to find, and they are a 2 pinion design. They are not as strong as the 4 pinion type diff's (Borg Warner). Some diff shops are putting BW centres etc in the Salisbury housings, and G&J diff's in Victoria have a replacement 4 pinion centre that they have made. Do a search on this site for info on these diff's. cheers |
