ok i pulled the cover off the shifter and theres a switch with 2 yellow wires coming off in and a green wire has been cut, i guess the green wire was the reverse? is there a way to test it?

Normally there is 2 switchs. One for reverse and one for start inhibit. Yours will most probably be inhibit. For reverse you will have to obtain another switch, fit it and wire it.
