Thread: Grovers HT....

Hey guys, been meaning to do this for a while so thought I should kick it off before I have to much catching up to do. I picked up a HT Kingswood earlier this year, and plan to do a full rebuild on it. I was into cars in a big way years ago, but got married, had kids, built a house etc so things ground to a halt. I ended up getting into fishing in a big way , but the last 12 months or so I have been getting the urge to play with cars again. So, I got the HT, bit of a dunger, 253 auto etc, and started to play. Sold my boat, picked up a 10 second LX Torana to keep me amused while the HT is taking shape. I have 5 years to get it done, as I told my youngest daughter that i will have it ready for her grade 10 leavers dinner....
Anyway, the body is pretty good, bit of rust in the usual places, but the floors, subframe etc are rust free. I pulled the 253 and trimatic out, the same night I paid for the car and sold it off, making sure I kept the sump etc. I did plan on going with a LS1 and bought one, but I was drawn back to the same engines I always had when I was younger, the humble 308. I have already picked up a lot of parts for the car and engine and will be doing pretty much everything myself apart from bodywork and paint. Plans are for a standard stroke 308, VN heads, solid cam etc, backed by a Hugo's Racematic and Borg Warner rear end.
A few pics from when I got it......

Next step was to start stripping her down, to really see what I had. Still no bad rust, the car has been rebuilt at some stage, sills have been replaced etc, but I really have to wonder why someone would put so much work into it and give it such a poxy colour scheme.....

Found a bit of rust under the windscreen, the corners were good but it was a bit crappy in the middle, so took it out and put some good stuff in.

In the meantime I had been deciding what to do about a diff......didn't see the need or expense of a 9 inch so went for a VL Borg Warner, and set one up. Since then though, I have decided to minitub the car so will have to start again as I will need to shorten a housing, at least I had some practice with this one.

Picked up some bits and pieces, a parts car for $50 from HKTG383, a set on convo's, and a mint HG Monaro bonnet from a bloke in Melbourne that had it stashed away for 20 years.
Not sure if I can use the bonnet yet as I have a Harrop single plane and Predator carb and I dont think it will fit under the bonnet........and wont be cutting any holes in it, so may have to use the original bonnet with one of those reverse cowl scoops every man and his dog seem to run these days.

Thanks. Next job was to get the front end off. Debated whether I should or not, but doing things properly won and off she come, with no hidden nasties apart from a little rust behind the steering box.

The firewall was pretty shitty from all the holes and shit that had added over the last 41 years, so decided to clean it up and remove the heater holes as well.

Next cab off the rank was the parcel shelf, it was rusty and had been butchered by some clown to put some big speakers in......so last week I decided it had to come out. The parts car had a good, grandma spec parcel shelf so out it came. Took mine out, cleaned up the donor shelf and made it all fit. Welded in, ground up and hit with some rust converter to sort out the little bit of rust pitting. There will be no stereo so no need for speaker holes in this one.

I am currently doing a VL BW for my HT kingswood. I noticed you've ditched the sway bar mounts, did you dummy it up to see if you can use the commodore sway bar? I'm pretty keen on making it work but haven't sat it in the car yet.

Dropped my block, crank, rods etc off today to be machined. Not going to need an engine for a while obviously but when I do it will be tucked away in the corner ready to drop in. Also went to see ol mate at the sheetmetal place to get my minitubs rolled up.
