I am laying out my fuel pump and filters today. Are there any hand and fast rules about placement of filters in relation to the pump? I can effectively fit the pre-filter straight to the inlet of the pump but I wonder if it should have a short run of pipe separating them. Same goes for the 100 micron filter after the pump - can fit straight on the end of the pump discharge but unsure if I should.

Nice build Dingo. I'm doing the injected 304 conversion as well. For the power steering do you use the stock 304 power steering pump and hook that up to your HQ power steering box? I brought a HQ power steering pump and box with a 308 bracket and cant get the belt to line up. Do you know if the 304 and 308 brackets are different? Cheers

The 304 bracket is fairly different to the 308 one, as I have just learned. I fitted the motor yesterday and the bracket fouled on the steering box. After a quick search I found the 308 bracket doesn't have the idler pulley bracket on it, which is the part that clashed. So I am looking for a 308 bracket now.

Finally got the motor in on Friday - been sitting on an engine stand for far too long. Can finish assembling the motor and get the wiring sorted after I have started sticking the front panels back on.

I have only stumbled across a couple of problems. One of them was addressed in the post above, being the 304 power steering bracket will not fit, so I need to stick the 308 one on. Second drama is the whole gearbox support issue. I bought a CRS crossmember to suit the 4L60e but even in the forward most position, its sits about 5mm too far back - should really be about 30mm closer to take advantage of the slotted holes. I am also unsure of which gearbox mount I should use. I have the original VT one, but the holes centres don't suit the crossmember, too wide. I have a 308 one from Mackay but the gearbox holes don't match the gearbox, about 12mm too wide. I also have the old 202 one, is perfect but the actual mount itself is a touch too wide and fouls on the gearbox. *facepalm*

Finally got the gearbox all mounted up last night after a bit of faffing around with rubber mounts. I ended up using a Mackay A1158 to suit a T400 box. Just had to slot the holes where the mount fixes to the 4L60e extension housing.

I spoke to the chap at Driveshaft Balancing Services yesterday and will be dropping off my tailshaft tomorrow to get shortened.

Spent a few minutes this arvo trying to hook up the shifter. I had bought a B&M T400 cable bracket kit ages ago when I was going to use a T400 in the conversion. The bracket didn't fit the oil pan bolting pattern so I knocked up one to suit. Just need to sort out the other end but my mate has my shifter gate (name?) that fixes to the column, so I need to get that back from him.

How can I get my power steering pump to line up with my 304 crank pulley? I am using a 308 bracket and its already spaced out about 32mm which I think is standard? Looks like it needs to go out about another 50mm to line up where the 304 P/S pump would have been on the 304 pulley.

Can I safely space it out ~82mm? Seems like a long way... It currently lines up pretty close to the closest groove (unused A/C belt) to the motor, but its not a V groove to suit the P/S pulley. Do I need to get a 308 crank pulley? Do I need to get CNC Davo to knock me up a flash billet one?!

Water pump and alternator are fine because thats all 304 gear and the belt sits nicely on the middle spot, the P/S pump is 308 so the interface isn't there.

That's how I set mine up. The way you've set it up now I'm thinking it might be backwards on the column (Park where Low is and Low where Park is)

It's hard to get a decent pic but here is what mine looks like at the box end.

With the power steering I think there is a couple of ways you could do it. The first way is as you've said, make longer spacers and space it out. The other way I think you might be able to do it is using the VT bracket to mount the HQ pump. You could get a HQ crank pulley but then you'd need to change the water pump pulley and the alternator pulley to V-groove pulleys. If there is enough room, I think using the VT bracket is possibly the best option, even if it needs a few mods to make it fit.

I had the same problem as you dingo hence why I asked about it a few posts back. In the end I ended up cutting my bracket and welding in a piece to space it out a bit.

Not sure what pulley I've got but I only needed to go as far out as the first groove which in my case was a V groove on my pulley.

Hope this helps a little bit.

I havent installed my power steering yet as I'm waiting for my replacement drag link and tie rods ends to turn up first.

Bugger! Might have to do some investigationing on that one.

I just went and had a look at this scenario but the VT P/S pump bracket doesn't pivot for belt tensioning like the HQ bracket does. Instead it has an idler pulley, but I'd have to chop off the section of the bracket that holds the idler pulley so it clears the steering box. Blerg. I think I'll just have to space the whole bracket out, hope it doesn't look too dodgy.
