Default how do i get my pulley off my alternator?

hello like the title says i need to remove my pulley off my alternator so i can install my gilmer drive, i always thought all i had to do was put my rattle gun on there and it would easily undo the nut, i did this and all it did was spin the pulley, i then stuck a long extension bar in the fins and did the same with no change. what am i doing wrong?

cheers adam

what type of altenator if its the australian type bosh it has a straight shaft with a key to locate the pully i would suggest an oxy gentley heat around the shaft apllying heat to pully only and a couple of choicely placed pry bars should free it.either that or some cats p**s and a puller.

if the pulley is spinng look past the fan and you will see spaces in the rotor behind if you place a screw driver in the gap of the rotor and against altenator body this will lock the rotor and the pulley will not spin either that or lock the pulley carefuly in a vise and undo.

if you lock up the rotor there is no way it can spin. might have top bend the fan up a little to make sure you lock the rotor nice and tight.i changed out 25 five altenators last month after the fridges i maintain hit 12000hrs as part of there service schedule so i came across some very stubborn units this always works.

the fastest most sucessful way is to use a rattle and a 15/16th socket. or pull the alternator apart and put the rotor in a vice. im an auto elec so if you need a hand give me a buzz mate. 0407 311 946
