Question 4x4 Hilux with Holden V8- Gearboxes

Hello all!
New to these forum thingies.
Am the owner of a 1979 Hilux 4x4 which has had the 18r engine replaced with a holden 253, it runs the original L40 4speed manual 4x4 trans. My oldman had the conversion done in the early 90's for better towing capabilities on the farm. Being only a 4speed its comfortable cruising speed is around 80km/h!! The cluch is getting knacked so I thought this would be a good time to upgrade to a 5speed. The company that did the conversion in Adelaide has since gone kaput, and other companies I've contacted havn't heard of 4speeds behind holdens. What I am hoping is that somone maybe knows what 5speed 4x4 box would bolt up the same as a 4speed or of the company that may have offered these bell housings for V8 holdens and 4x4 4speeds.
Any help welcomed, Cheers

if you have the factory g/box in it why not try a celica 5speed? try marks 4x4 adapters or dellows for the bellhousing.

I believe that the later 5 speed Hilux boxes are basically the same as the Supra ones except with the transfer box hanging off the rear housing. If thats the case then there will be heaps of parts available for mating this box to the engine, maybe even the same as what you already have. Someone like Dellow would know all about it.

HIKFRD, you wouldn't happen to know if these 5speeds utilise the same bell housing as a 4 speed or would i have to change that also?

You need to go with an "R" series 5 speed as they are tuff as (found in the Surf Diesels & V6 Runners). You will have to change the bellhousing as well.
Get in touch with Dellows, Marks adaptors or Castlemain Rod Shop for prices on them.
Clutch wise I'm happy with the Excedy Safari Tuff clutch & pressure plate (handles the abuse well)

I am a moderator on downunder4x4.com, you will get some great advice from a couple of our very knowledgable members(almost encyclopedias).

The V6 hilux box is the strongest out of the lot though, don't even bother with a G52 for strength, they die fairly quickly with any more than a 2.8's torque.

Sorry, I'm not trying to spam the board by posting another website but he will get great info there!

The R series of box btw is basically a supra box, the only downside to them is that they run a chain driven transfer case instead of the gear driven one you have now. There are alot more gearing options for the gear driven top shifter case you have, including mating it behind a later transfer for deeeeeeep reduction in the bush
