Default Just bought a UC, need a little 304/308 info and more..

Hey all, I am picking up an almost immaculate and original UC torana on sunday as a project.

The rough plans so far after speaking to a local engineer is a 5 litre on gas.

I have been offered a 5 litre and 5 speed out of a VP (I think) but am yet to settle on price.

I mainly want the manual box so I can get involved in some club racing on the side.

I am wondering if I would even need any of the efi system while running 100% gas, could this all be stripped and go back to a basic mixer type system on an efi motor without the computer and all the wiring that goes with it?

Further to that, as this person wants me to make an offer on his motor and box(I think if he wants an auction he should take it to ebay) would a commodore 5 speed adapt directly to a blue or black motor? Basically are the bolt patterns the same with only a different GMH bellhousing needed?

I would truly appreciate any informative answers and thankyou in advance, I hope to hang around this board for a while and share my new toy with you all.

Cheers, Craig

*edit* my msn is blackl67@live.com.au if any of you guys use it.

you can use the bare bones efi setup for your gas conversion. no computer needed. you will just need to use a different distributor.

the 5 speed will bolt up to any turbo pattern block, with no other mods

Sounds good Wabbit, thanks for the reply.

I rang oldmate today and he said $2300 for the motor, box, injection, computer etc, all VS gear.

Is this too much, will the selling price of injection gear on ebay offset that price enough to justify it??

I fitted a commodore V6 into my 4x4 hilux and the computer and injection side of it was the worst of it, wel most costly anyway.

I figure with the price of petrol rising and the current $2000 rebate available for gas installation I can basically end up with a running 304 on straight gas for around $3000 total, making it easier to beg the missus for funds for the bigger brakes etc.

Gee that Hoppes Stoppers gear looks nice

The Hoppers gear isn't bad, is your UC a hatch or sedan?

That price would be cheap here

It is a sedan, would have loved a hatch as I have always dreamt of an LX SS but they aren't affordable to me atm and I couldn't justify the prices I am seeing on UC hatches either.

I wasn't even looking so much at the UC's but I couldn't go past it, $1000 off the second owner of 27 years(out of 30) with original number plates and absolutely untouched in pretty good nick STILL REGOED!!!!

We are driving about 6 hours to pick it up then return, inspection pending still though I have paid a deposit and just by the photo's on the advertisement I know it is smick!

The owners of 27 years must be about 75yo, their names are Ivy and Clive, I can't wait to throw some photos up for you guys and show ya's

76lxhatch, I was looking over your thread today and that is one nice a9x, is it genuine or a mock-up?

Sounds good, looking forward to the photos

No mine's definitely not an A9X, it was originally a 253 SS. I couldn't afford an SS at today's prices either!

This is my 4x4 lux I sold a couple of weeks ago...

I owned it for about 7 years and did everything myself.

2" bodylift, 3" suspension lift, shortened and strengthened chassis, custom tray, VP V6 motr and box, 33x12.50 tyres, awesome stereo etc etc. Unfortunately with the birth of my twin boys came the death of my 4wding though I wouldn't change it for the world.

The family car is a black VT berlina with the L67 supercharged motor but somehow I always get the keys to the yota seca

The plates say Cregga, that's what my mates call me.

It certainly does look good in the pics, a five speed and injected V8 would go just nicely

Speaking of the 5 speed, I beleive all torana's were a cable clutch, I wonder if a commodore pedal set would be easy enough to graft in? Obviously a hole would have to be drilled into the firewall and a master cylinder bolted in place but I doubt this would be an easy task if I used a torana pedal set.

Can use a hydraulic clutch with the Torana pedal, the master cylinder sits on a bit of a funny angle but it works fine (I have one). Its the clearance on the firewall side thats the hard part, not much room between the booster and the rocker cover.

Well I just finished a 1000km round trip to pick it up minus a torana!!

There was rust all through it(she told me only a lil in the boot), the rust in the boot was only surface rust that wasn't worth mentioning(She probably thought I wouldn't look elsewhere).

And the thing that shat me up the wall was that the paint had deep crows feet all the way through it, it was crazed more than a mad woman!! and this lady somehow forgot to mention it...

I ended up getting my $100 deposit back after a heated discussion but it doesn't replace the 95litres of fuel, takeaway food for the weekend to feed the wife and I plus $130 on accomodation last night.

To say I am upset would be an understatement!!

Atleast we now know our 8 month old twin boys are well behaved on "holiday" I guess

Gutted, sorry to hear that. Were the photos old ones or just carefully taken do you reckon? I'm sure you'll find a good one yet
