Default Scott Vk project

ok.....finally bit the bullet......

wasnt looking foward to starting a new thread on the project, but i guess it had to happen

ok for those that got in late, iv'e got a 1984 VK berlina, a piece of faeces atm but looking to freshen it up, with a 5 year build, still hoping for top 60 (ish) summernats and a competent burnout/drag weapon

here's the link to the old thread (dont delete plz admins!) http://aussiev8.com.au/showthread.php?p=164526

Quote:
I doubt you'll listen to me though as you haven't listened to any of the more knowledgeable heads here. All I can say is I admire your enthusiasm, don't lose that
and i will, just i am getting a bit confused with the rear end stuff, with all the panhard rods and stuff, ill have a look under the rear to see what it looks like

will it work with bags though?

and are there any diffs between the hdt group A and the group three kit? need to know coz i might be getting one next wendsday

Why not use this car to practise some skills on before you spend all your money on a project that may/may not get finished.

Your money might be better spent buying some tools and stuff you need to seriously build a car, welder, compressor all that stuff.

Just work to getting this one cleaned up and registered, then youll have a good idea on whats required to make the next one a ripper. If your keen on vk's theyre around for not much coin, dont be dissapointed if you dont get it right first time round.

Forget about 3 links and such, im sure the factory suspension didnt have much trouble getting around the mountain way back when.

Good luck...
and ill need to get the tools before i do the work, i agree with you there, but i dont want to spend some cash on it, then have to heap more in it, redoing some of the stuff to get it better............

Yes have a look under there - the panhard rod is the big bar on the back of the diff which is attached to the diff on the driver side and the chassis on the passenger side. Because the trailing arms all point directly forward, this is required to minimise sideways movement of the diff. It is a fairly basic system though (e.g. compared to others like the watts link found on certain Fords) and if the car is lowered the angle changes and pushes the diff toward the passenger side - the solution is a bar with a threaded centre section so the length can be adjusted to suit the car's height. Other than this minor change which is only necessary if you lower the car, I think it'd be a good idea to stick with the standard suspension. With a basic overhaul (new bushes) it will do you well for many years. There is a huge choice of shocks and springs readily available at good prices that will transform the handling too.

Sounds like a lot of hard work (not to mention expense) for not much, but I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to find an airbag system which simply sits in place of the spring on the rear end.

Not 100% sure on this, but I think they're the same. If there are differences they must be minor, I haven't noticed them. What does it matter if you like the look of the one you're getting?

I wouldn't worry too much about redoing things later costing you money. Its the hare-brained schemes that we come up with and the impulse buys of parts that are never used that wastes more cash. Been there, done that...

good on you scott!!
although those welds are WOEFUL!!!!
just kidding, I teach people your age to weld for a living... and just so you know, the paint doesn't help it stick together!!
if you ever need any hints on fabrication or setting something up just pm me and we might be able to sort something out.
all the best
Ash.

and 76, thanks for the shout down on the previous thread. I knew they were different (ie the panhard rod) but just not how. I think this thread should be much more positive if scotto keeps a level head and never, ever, mentions his top speed aspirations!!!

as prolly the only CPA on the planet with a welders cert
(8 years uni...3 years TAFE part time)
can i suggest you start by
...leaving a bead on a piece of flat plate as practice
practice the strike and then run along the plate
no gaps no jumps no holes
and practice again, get the angle and speed right

when that looks good..then practice with a T joint
butt welds are NOT good items to practice

and good luck with the build

hth

just keep playing with the welds mate, youll get there, just get a heap of scrap and a box of rods and go mental. Access to a good mig is always good though, they make life a lot easier, only thing is you need a shed to work with it, i picked mine up at a very good price and havent looked back. only thing is to make sure you have nice bare metal to start with any paint/rust/scale will make it a bitch. as smitty said practice with beads on plate, and work up from there

I cant believe no ones pointed out the useless of arc welds on cars.

Good on you though for having a crack, welding properly is a great skill to have.

you can use arc welding an many aspects of a car build green.
they are cheap and there are tons of different types of electrodes available for different applications.
he has to start welding somewhere and you really do build up skills that can be utilised in any welding process using arc.
I teach arc welding to my apprentices first because all other processes are simplified when they have the basics covered through arc.
yes, MIG is the most versatile but it is far more expensive to set up. I know where you are coming from, but scotto is learning skills that will last him forever.
e.g. on the weekend I had to weld an exhaust into place. I had left my mig at College so I welded it up with the arc... job done. takes a level of skill, but the dude is only 15.
peace out.

and... if he buys himself a small inverter to begin with, he can buy a tig kit and be able to weld all sorts of things later on!!

Just dont hit the panels with the arc lol.

Your right about mig being plenty dear to get a good one though. I got a big bastard years ago, still havent got around to getting a bottle for it, but it welds gasless ok.

I must enrol in a proper welding course, panels fine but the heavy stuff Im no good at and theres so much in my head I need to get built.

i would imagine that you'd need both tig and mig welds on a car, but arc isnt as useful as mig on cars

yeh the pieces had paint on them, sometimes i was too lazy to grind it off, then i took them (the pieces of metal) out of the vice and they'd either fall apart or come apart with ease

and thanks for the offer, when i get a welder, and know what im gonna do to the car, ill pm u and try and sort something...though if i come down there, ill have to wait till my brother gets a torquier car with a towbar! and a car trailer

thanks for the input everyone
speshly ash, hunjy, smitty and greenhj, and everyone else in the other thread
