Default VE VIP - Where to start?

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice to start getting the Val into shape. I bought a VE VIP from a really old bloke in a small country town near where I live. It seems like it's in pretty good nick. Has original bill of sale, service record and chrysler advertising stuff in glove box. No rust apart from a couple of bubbles at the bottom of 1 door and a bit at the base of rear pillar, missing wing mirrors and a few small dings in trim (see pics). It runs really well on gas but like a bucket of pus on petrol (chugs a bit and eventually stalls). It leaks a fair bit of oil, but doesn't blow any smoke.

What I want to know is whether it's worth keeping (rebuilding) the original 273 which must be due for some love by now (151,000 miles). Or putting a 318 into it, which is a what a mate reckons I should do? I'm not after a performance car, just an everyday drive cruiser. I really need to get the oil leak fixed cos it drives me nuts leaving a little puddle of oil everywhere I park, but don't want to spend the money if I'm gonna replace the donk anyway.

Can anyone give me a ball park figure on either option?

Thanks.

Go 318. Nice sound. Decent (not neck-breaking) performance. I guess you're not worrying about fuel economy.

I'd stay with the 273. Cheapest way out. If it's in resonable nick I'd fix the oil leaks and drive it.
Very few cars run well on gas and petrol.

If money is no object then id go 360 all the way!!!

360 Strait Gas is very possible with the right bits. I'm going that way with my VK and if you look into it it's pretty easy and worth while. just have to get the heads sorted and a good gas systeme. Big 6 fuel cost BIG 8 GO

^^ YES!!

Dual fuel is crap though. My uncle just rented an XE falcon which runs dual fuel. Cough, spit, splutter.

But add gas injection onto a fuel injected motor and it all works well. I'm going to try straight gas injection on a blown 360 in a AP5.

318 sounds good to me. Where do I start looking for one? Also, is gas with no petrol a viable option? Is it possible to get the most out of both (dual fuel), ie. can the motor be tuned properly to both at the same time?

In the end, it's better to tune an engine for one or the other.

unless you liquid gas injection, which isn't available just yet you will never be able to get a good tune for both LPG and Petrol, you would be better off just going straight gas. cheaper to run, and given a proper tune can only be down in performance by about 10 hp in some cases

Does anyone know whether VE VIP came out with a 318 (or something bigger than a 273) option? I'd like to keep the car as original as possible. I don't know %*@# about cars so all the info you guys are providing is much appreciated, thanks for helping out a noob

Yeah gas would be awesome re day to day running costs. Someone told me that you need to run a gas ready engine on petrol from time to time, is this true?

I think you need to run in your engine on petrol though.
