Default Turbine cars

Anyone know much about these? Or anyone keen to see how it works. Mopar did it first but it never got big.

The motor compares to a 200hp V8.

I believe one of the problems that arise from using turbines is that the engine doesn't like variable loads and/or rpm. Although you can run them on almost any kind of flammable liquid!

The main problem was a lack of efficiency. Those turbine cars were given to members of the public to drive and evaluate. After the test period they were handed back to Chrysler and all but one were crushed. The remaining one is in a museum in the USA.

btw, for those that don't know, a turbine engine is a jet engine, but instead of useing thrust they are geared off the prop shaft.

I read the wiki article on this not too long ago (amongst other articles).

Apparently towards the end of their developement they had overcome most of the inefficiencies and were deemed suitable for road use. One report showed a test car in that was capable of 22mpg from a 5th gen turbine (not great I know but not bad for a turbine).

I think it was just the fact that the public wanted the sound of a V8 over the sound of a vacuum cleaner that sealed their fate in the end. I also found this quote but it's not referenced in any way:
Quote:
Your government thought it was too much of a risk and ordered the car cancelled as "too risky, from an economic standpoint."
Read the whole article HERE and further stuff HERE

You should check out the MTT Y2K motorcycle.

It is made by Marine Turbine Technologies in the US and has a top speed of 400 kmh and costs about $185,000 US. (fastest bike in world)

It is powered by a Rolls Royce gas turbine engine from a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter.

The advantage is that it can run on just about any fuel (kero, petrol, oil) but is recomeded to use diesel and only needs a two speed transmission.

The disadvantage with gas turbines is high cost of manufacture and the exhaust temp is about 1,200F.

Could always put one in a car?
