Default is a BK24L hub adapter the right one for a 82 Camaro???

Hey Guys

I have an 82 GM Camaro which I want to put a steering hub adapter on her.

I was told it is a 13 BK24L (SAAS)

this also fits various Toranas, Commodores and Statesmans.

Trouble is when I placed the hub adapter on the spline it is fowled by a metal plate.

I have taken a photo (I could not attach so have put the link in)

I need to know

1. does your spline setup look the same
2. when you fit a hub adapter does the metal circular plate need to be removed.
3. if yes then how do you remove!
4. If no any ideas where I could buy one.

Hey mate, Ive rebuilt many of these, dont remove the pressure plate this holds the upper and lower bearing in place for your tilt assembly, also the cam mechanism for your indicators is directly below it, should you wish to remove it down the bottom in the middle of that plate is a circlip spring whatever, you need to push hard on the steel plate downwards and then pry the circlip free of its groove.

But for fitment of sports steering whheel adaptor you dont need to remove anything else, just fit the adaptor and your done

on a second viewing of that photo is that plate loose, if so then you need to respring it before you can even come close to fitting the adaptor or steering wheel back on.

Thanks Steve

I will not remove the pressure plate (actually it is still very firm)

The BK24L must not be the right adapter as when the pressure plate is in place I cannot get the adapter to slide all the way home.

If you have any ideas where to find the right one in Australia please let me know.

And thanks again

on a side issue, The Hazard switch on the right hand side of the steering column does not work - is this normally an electrical problem or mechanical mechinism issue.

Also you may have noticed the oil pressure guage reads well over 60 but the engine was not even running! - The guy who owned it before me put in a torana sender unit in the engine bay. any ideas where to get one?

cheers!

Hi mate, I originally searched ebay australia and apparantly a chev unit will work, but I played it safe and ordered one from the states, postage was like 12 dollars etc. The hazard switch could be the flasher unit missing, if your indicators are working fine then I would suspect that part first, the hazard switch actually pushes a plunger which mechanical moves both indicator circuits, hence why I would suspect the seperate hazard flasher.

Thanks Steve
I will check the flasher unit, the blinkers work fine.

Would you know anything about the oil sender unit, I know the guy who had it before me just put one in from a Torana.

Are they meant to sit about the 60 mark, or should it drop to 0 when the ignition is switched off.

Also any GM (Holden )switches the same for an 82 Camaro 5 Litre
Hey and also what year Camaros have you got.

Cheers

Hi mate, firstly second and third gen camaros both have pretty much identical steering columns just the outer shrouding is different. Both of my girls are second gens. I use the standard holden oil pressure light switch unit, regarding your gauge I cant answer that one for you, but common sense would say without engine running it should read zero, dave at ponti world in wollongong has an online store,

http://www.usgmsp.com/

you could possibly check his stuff out, it might help, also you could try the aussie camaro firebirds websites

Theres two of them.

http://www.fbodyaustralia.org/index.php

http://camaro-firebird.org/forum/

Just post the question and guarteed it will be answered

Hi mate, you need to start ordering stuff direct from the USA, it's heaps cheaper and these cars are really easy to get parts for over there.
Here's some to try:
http://www.top-downsolutions.com/
Lons a great guy and their products are great
go to
www.thirdgen.org
all the info you will need can be found on there
and also go to the fbodies forum Simso mentioned, great bunch of guys who can help with this kind of stuff. For you steering wheel, I went through all of this too, the spline is the same but the camaros/firebirds don't use a spline on the wheel for the steering lock so the Holden ones don't fit unless you machine them down a bit, get the correct one off ebay or summit racing in the USA. If there is anything else you need to know, feel free to PM me as I drive an '88 Trans Am as my daily driver.
