Default changing oil pickup on sbc

hi all
im changing sump & oil pickup on my 350 from corvette (same as hq type i think) to hk-hg.looking at the pickup i cant see anything that holds it in the pump & it does not bolt to a main cap.looks like its just a tight fit with some sealer on it or does something actually hold it there & whats the best way to get it out & put new one in.

thanks davo

To be safe you really need to weld the pickup to the pump or it will come out and cost you an engine

Hi Davo,

I'm confused,
I your first post you say can't see how to keep pickup on and your last post you answer your own question ??

trikhq the pickup that was on it did not bolt to a main cap & looking at it it appears it is only a press fit into oil pump with some sealer around it & was not sure on how to get it out of the pump. do i just tap it out of the pump with a hammer or is there a trick to getting them out & yes i know the new pickup bolts to a main cap so that should hold it in place but again do i just tap the new one into the pump up to the shoulder with a bit of sealer around it to make sure it doesnt suck any air. its my first chev & wasnt sure on how to do it thought id ask before doing it.

OK , Understand now

The old pickup should come out with some persuasion, you will need to knock out as is a tight fit.

Getting it in is the opposite, you should be able to tap in but don't hit too hard as you might dent the pipe, use just enough force to keep it moving. you can use a sealer/loctite to ensure seal.

You could put the pickup in the freezer for a couple of hrs, it would make it easier for you to knock in. ( sounds strange but we use this process at work at times for various things)

Davo, I know youve already fitted the pickup but for info yes they are simply a press fit in. Theres a raised rib all the way around the pickup tube as well, use that with something like a small chisel and hammer and knock against the rim until its flush with the pump itself.

Sometimes people will braize them in, but you would have to be talking about some serious vibrations to require this extra work
