Default Buying a Gen 3

I've got a 64 EH Prem with a mild 202. Turning 21 mid this year, I get off my P's so I'm after something with a bit more grunt than the ol' Red Motor, and something that's reliable. I wanted a carby engine first up and I had the idea of getting a crate motor (350/383) for a while cos they're so cheap, but that has since changed after talking to a few people about crate engines and carby V8's for that matter... I've never really been into having a new tech engine in an old car, but it's different and different is a good thing

So I'm jus wondering where I would go to buy a complete standard GEN 3 engine? I know of all the after market modders/tuners, but I don't have a clue on where to buy or who's the best to buy from.... Do you go to the wreckers (Fawls Acutions) or can you buy them "off the shelf" sort of thing?

Thanks.

wreckers. or buy a wrecked car from fowles as you said, that way you get all the computers, dash, wiring loom, everything..
its a bloody big job to put an LS1 into an EH.
that has been my dream for many years, but a wagon... for the past 18+ months i have been researching it.. and theres soo much i dont know.
there was an EH with a GenIII in SM a few months back.. worth a good read.

Yeh I've seen two. One was the black crewman EH in Street Machine, very nice. The other was a bright red EH, won Grand Champion in the EH All State Run a couple of years ago or so...

With buying from a wreckers like Fawls, how do you know you're getting something that's worth while? I mean, for all I know it could be f*cked without me knowing? Or do you get some sort of warranty?

yeah that red one is sexy!
na fowles deffintly dont give you a warranty.. you try and do your research with the car, find one you want, hopefully they will have the books on them. its a risk you take, although we have never bought a damaged car from fowles, we have bought many ex fleet, you can get the books, all that crap, see who the ex owner was. blah blah blah.
wait, i noticed you have mentioned fawls as a wreckers? do you mean the auctioneers? where you can buy compleat damaged cars, along with ex fleet, repod and all that?
http://www.manheimfowles.com.au/ ??
or somewhere else?

the red one sure is a looker...

how about going bigger... LS2? they keep the same size as the LS1. Price is the only problem, apart from getting an engineer to sign it off, same with the LS1. Most engineers won't even let you go above 5 litres anyway.

Yeah Fawls Auctioneers is the one I ment, sorry to confuse you. My bosses mate's young bloke bought a VS SS 5.0ltr from there - a statutory write off. Had bugger all damage really, small ding in the bonnet and another in the boot - nothing really. He got it for $3500 or some ridiculous price like that.
Do Fawls Auctions give a warranty, or nah?

What model Commodore is the LS2 in???? The reason for looking at the LS1 this time round was the price and they're easy to mod for more power (not that I'll really need to ) economical and all that other stuff. People rave about em and I don't blame them after driving my old ladies VX SS home from a service the other day and it's only standard.

And the price of that 6.0ltr donk almost looks too good to be true Smitty haha. Nice one!

as said mate your best bet is to get a wreck that way you will get motor, box , computer and everything else needed for the conversion
then all you will have to do is get a conversion kit
try this place they should be able to help with that

Yeah I thought the LS2 was in the VZ series 2, bit too over the top for my likes/needs. Seems dodgey to buy from Fawls cos you don't know the life of the car and who's owned it previously. But then again you're getting everything you need for a conversion.

Would it be safe to have the engine rebuilt to make sure you're avoiding all problems? Or is that going a bit too far?

Hah, nah no death wish mate. A car is only as fast as you want it to be. I've been booked speeding in a 3.0ltr Diesel Hilux.
But that's my reason for going to a V8, more reliability and more grunt. The hotter the motor the more problems and more tuning jus to keep it on the road.

Is there much difference in dimensions between the LS1 and the LS2? I googled for ages but couldn't find any!
