Default 350/383 or 400 sbc

hi.. looking for some thoughts on which is the better option, the car will see some strip time so do i go with the 383 stroker or 400 .plenty of people go the 350/383 but why not just start with the bigger cube 400 or is bigger not always better or is it cost factor with parts etc..cheers

As long as you get a good block a 400 is fine, just get a real good cooling system, they do run hotter being siamesed bores.
After market block is the go if you can afford it. Even a 4.125" bore and a 3.48" stroke will work good.

Go with a 400 but block selection is critical as they crack around the steam holes .The cost is the same as a 350 .You gain a lot more torque with the 400.6-7 grand will net you 500 plus hp -ft/lb if you build the right combo.

A good mate of mine used that bore stroke combo in his rail in the early 90's to compete in a certain class and held the title for quite a while .It made over 700 and spun to 10 000 till he flipped it at the creek at 170 mph.

I have a 400 in my prem, and I love it. It makes 500 ft/lbs of torque. But finding a good 400 block these days is near on impossible. If the budget allows buy a dart lttle M block and fill it full of 400 chev parts. Otherwise a 383 stroker may be a good alternative.

Yeah mate and with a 3.25" stroke. All good. Big bore short stroke and winde it to oblivion is the best way to make upper end HP.
4.125" x 3.00" is 320.73cubes
4.125" x 3.25" is 347.46cubes

I went the 383 but that was only because our car was licensed with the 350, so to the unassuming eye, its still a 350 and its all "legal"

Cheers
