Default importing 350/380 stroker from usa

hi all, im just starting a build on a hg prem want to go chev (always had 308s) & was looking at some 383 strokers from the usa that are a good prices & cost of shipping is not to bad either by boat. the engine mob will ship it from their end & works out to be a cost effective way of getting a fairly tuff motor, would like to know if anyone has done this & what is involved in getting motor when it arrives in australia from the wharf.as i assume the wharf will just contact me & tell me its here & to come pick it up when it arrives & is there any taxs or hidden costs i might have to pay when i pick it up (ill bet there is) im flying blind with this (lol) so any help is appreciated..

CUstoms will sting you gst most likely. A mate of mine just recently brought some Air flow research heads in from a shop on ebay usa. They were US$1500 + $400 shipping, then customs charged him about A$450 to release them. So they cost him about $2500 at his door. Still cheaper than buying them here.

Is there a way to work out the import fees? Might be worth knowing the true cost before committing to a purchase.

Have a read of this. A bit long winded, but it expains the fees and charges:

im trying to find out what import fees i might have to pay but that seems to be easier said than done. seems way to easy to be able to just order & pay for motor & shipping then just pick it up when it arrives without some kind of obscene import tax..nothing is ever that easy

Bit harder to hide a small block down your pants, or up your @!# (if you know what I mean) I reckon theyve got you by the knackers as far as taxes etc. Unless you know a crooked wharfie (if there is such a thing)

Let us know what they sting you, might be handy to know.

Cheers for the link lx

I know a guy who brings in at least 15 containers a year so anything I buy over there I can just get sent to his depot in California and it'll be packed in his container and brought over that way. I haven't actually got anything yet but will be soon... Still not sure about the exact charges at customs but it still works out heaps cheaper, especially with how the dollar is at the moment.

customs costs is 10% of the price if it s over $1000
no charges if its under $1000
why not go a LS1 or L76 easy horse power and good on fuel

Ring customs and they will a run down on all charges. On top of the motor price $4000 I would be up for $1500-$2000 to get it off the warf....
