Hi Guys,
Basicly today I started to look at Gen 3's to use for in my v8 wrangler conversion and after looking at one I wanted to know if there was anything I should really look out for. Im not technically familiar with the engines and was looking for abit of knowledge and wisdom on common problems and issues that I shouold be wary of. The one I looked at today was a pranged 2002 vx executive, auto, 140,000k's, on gas (conversion was done 6months after it came of production line) and the guy wants $4500 (rear damage and minor drivers front, engine fine and runs) The questions I basicly had where: - Do Gen 3's on Lpg wear quicker then those not on Lpg? - Should I be nesitant of a gen 3 on Lpg? - Are there common problems associated with gen 3's that I should be aware of? - Is 140000k's alot for a gen 3 and should I be looking at ones with lower k's and basicly any other infomation i should probly be aware of before purchasing anything. sorry for all the questions and any info or advice would be much apprecited.. Thanks Ryan |

Do a comp test 1st before anything. The exhaust valves and seats are fairly soft and quite often not suited to LPG on most engines. You hear glamour stories and you hear horror stories with LPG on std engines. A goog high nickel valve seat insert and a set of stainless valves is the way to go, but at a fair cost.
Any time you pull down late model engines using even just ulp the exhaust seats are pitted, pounded and rounded out. So LPG is an even harsher fuel (dry) and hotter. A comp test with a good quality guage and the std comp pressure spec will let you know if its in ok shape. I wouldnt buy anything and just throw it in without checking it out unless I knew its history.

id be looking for one that can be proven to run, obviously the newer models SHOULD hvae lower k's but so u know, i think half way through the vy range they went to a computer controled throttle body, all earlyer ones were cable type, if i was to be looking for one myself, id be looking for one out of a late vt and vx that had been recalled or reco'ed for the piston slap problem, iv seen good engines going for around 3-4 grand lately, so old mates one sounds good, but id hagle with him a bit

Mate those prices are a bit high I would have thought for a GenIII. At motorvation there was a brand new GenIII in a crate for $3500....
I personly would def go for a GenIII that was from the year of the VX or even one out of a VU SS ute would be the go. When i was lookin for my clubby I was told not the series1 vt clubby due to the amount of problems they have. Good luck mate

as stated above s1 vt didnt have the gen3, that was still the 5ltr, the series 2 vt being the first fitted with the gen3, and yes they did have alot of dramas, as it turns out though some of the first gen3 actualy survived quite well if they got thrashed from day one

you shouldnt have a problem with any LS1 these days as all the problems have been fixed ,the problems with the early LS1's with oil consumption where when they where new and all have been fixed so you shouldnt have any trouble's
i would try and go for a VX series as they have the better LS6 manifold 140 000km is f@#k all there are limo company's running up to 500 000km without any troubles as long as they are serviced regularly but $4500 is a good price for a complete car as you can get everything you need for the conversion loom,PCM etc dont know much about LPG so i cant help you there
