Mark,
They are dead easy to fit.
1.Pull the coolant drain plug out of the block on the drivers side and screw the knock sensor in.
2. Go to a holden dealer and ask for a 'knock sensor lead' that was fitted to the VN's. If you can get one of these, it is easier to fit, because the lead already has a grommet fitted to it (for plugging into the firewall to stop engine noise and also to seal the cabin from the engine bay), it also has the terminal fitted to it for plugging into the ECM, and best of all it has a high temp resitant tubing over the lead at the knock sensor end. This is very important to have because the knock sensor is only a few inches away from the exhaust manifold, it it will stop the wire and connector from melting from the heat from your exhaust manifolds or extractors.

Don't worry about stuffing it up and retarding your timing. The only thing a knock sensor will do is slightly pull back your advance when your engine is knocking.
