Alrighty. Totally new to this caper but I have gotten a working diff for Panelvan (finally) and it was rusty as all hell...
So I took to it with a wire wheel on an angle grinder and it has come up trumps... BUT. The diff looks like the seal (front of the housing to the rear of the housing) is done with silicone... and the silicone is starting to perish. How do I change it or fix it? remove the 6 bolts (or how ever many there are) and pull the front off? and then get a new gasket?? or something like that?? Or do I just fill in the gaps with silicone (no oil is currently leaking out) and then paint over it. was planing to paint it with Rust retardant high temp paint... Advise is most appreciated... |

! i just realised that you were talking about the gasket between the centre and the housing, yeah just undo the bolts(make sure you,ve got the axles out first)then buy a new gasket and installation is a reversal of removal.

Yep, changing the gasket is easy,If you haven,t already got the axles out it can sometimes be a mongrel of a job.Easiest way i,ve got them out is by turning the brake drum around the other way , screwing on 3 of the wheel nuts (about three or four turns)and you just use it like a slide hammer to pull the axle out. They can be a bit stubborn but they eventually come out.I usually use a bit of gasket cement or silastic on the gasket to help seal it up.

banjo diff or salisbury diff? salisbury shouldn't need the axles removed because it's just a pressed bit of plate bolted on the back. banjo diff on the otherhand is a bit more of a pain from what i remember because the front of the diff has to come off and that requires removal of the drive shaft (and axles). i could be wrong, please someone correct me if i am.

Well all went back into the panel van today - and the diff sound is better but there is an almighty metallic clang when the gear actually engages... therefore I am thinking the diff wasn't as bad as I thought but the transmission is actually stuffed... And not to mention the steering being shit!
So, I am going to try and take it to a mechanic and get them to do a rego check (and I know it will fail) but also so I know what needs to be done and if get the shits I'll pay someone to get this bloody car going... I need it in like 5-7 weeks cause I am moving house and I so don't want to sell it... *end of rant, blood presure returning to normal* ![]() |
