Default temp problem HZ kingswood

In the girlfriends wagon, when she's driving the temperature goes through the roof. But when she stops at the lights or something, it cools down. Any ideas?

Do you have a thermostat fitted? If you don't, when the revs are higher, the water flow increases and the coolant in the radiator rushes through too fast to be cooled enough. When the revs decrease to idle, the coolant flow slows and so does the speed of the coolant through the radiator. This should give it enough time to transfer the heat out of the engine. The thermostat is designed to speed up the initial warm up of the engine but when it opens, it still restricts the flow to the correct speed. I'd say check the thermostat first before anything.

Just another thought while you have the coolant out. How old is the water pump? If it's corroded on the impellor, you may have lost some of the vanes. When the engine is revving, you need extra cooling efficiency. If one or more of the vanes are gone, that will be reduced. Check the pulley mount to shaft to see if it's loose. It's only a gasket to remove the pump. Also check that the fan belt is tight enough. Also, why not clean out the cooling system while it's empty? That way you can make sure it's not sludge. Just a small thought. Is it getting physically hot or is it just indicating hot. I had a mate who thought his car was overheating. Replaced the whole cooling system, even the gauge. Turned out it was a faulty sender unit.

as doc said it will be the thermostat because as the revs are higher the water goes through the engine alot faster and cant have time to cool down
what the thermostat does

Ended up being a faulty sender. Cheers for the help.
