Default Engine Mods?

Hi, I've recently bought myself an 82 Wb ute with a 202 blue motor and was wondering wat I should do to hot it up abit. A mate of mine has a hollie 2 barrel with manifold, but I am waiting to see if he comes through, she is also getting exhaust and extractors this week. If anyone has any ideas on wat else I should do, would be appreciated. preferrably the cheapest way possible as I am still 17 and at school anyways let us know wat you all think.

save up and buy an 8 for it. Any money you spend on the six is not gonna be value for money as it takes a lot of work and money to get a 202 to go hard in a WB. It wouldn'r cost much to buy a rusty V8 powered hz to get all the parts to do the swap.

Van is right, you will never be happy with the 202, I was in exactly the same situation with my van. I ended up keeping the 202 basically stock just chucked on some extractors and a 2 1/4 exhause to free it up abit (cos they are thirsty beasts) and waited till i got off the P's. Reasons being cops wont care half as much about you if there is a 6 in the front, but will give you heaps for a P plater with an 8, plus, are you looking at getting the thing insured?! they wont touch you with a 10 foot pole if there is an 8 in it.
any way, spent 18 months with the 202 (nil interest from the cops) saved money (instead of hotting up the 202) got off the P's and am now putting a 5.0ltr in the front, if you have ever sat next to one of these at the lights and listened to her open up, you will know why waiting awhile and going down the 8 pot path is the only way.

i'll agree with both of them, with a few additions, keeping in mind that you're on a budget.

stick with the 6 until you finish building the 8. you have got a V8 rebuilder lined up, haven't you?

as for the 202, a 350 holley, exhaust and cam will see you on your way.
you don't need any head work. the blue head will be fine as long as it's not rooted. they're better than a stage 3 yella terra red head
wack an open air cleaner on the carb.
a 2 1/4" system with extractors will be enough for getting rid of the smelly stuff
cam choice comes down to whether you've got an auto or manual, and what you want out of it. being on a budget, it also depends on what cams you can find laying about.

where in sunny QLD are you?

My car is already insured for the 6, but a V8 will hike my premium abit lol. The motor is in great nick, brand new gem blue motor 20,000k's ago in her. Anywhere I can find a good 2nd hand cam? lol

yeah i reckon you stick with the 202 until you,re off your P,s.Just do minor stuff to it ,like a better exhaust system, air cleaner ,mild cam etc.If you start going too crazy on it ,its just gonna use as much fuel as an 8 and not go as hard.

Don't be tooo hasty in chasing down a v8. A 202 in decent condition can be brought up to respectable performance pretty cheaply and easily, although there is a distinct limit where it begins to get expensive.
This question seems to come up pretty regularly, and this is what i learned the hard way:

1) Get a decent set of extractors. I recommend tri-y pacemakers, and they can be had for about $50 s/hand pretty much everywhere. Back it up with a 2 1/2 inch press bent system (it's a 202, dont worry about mandrel bends) and a lukey turbo or similar muffler. This combo sounds nice, and is relatively quiet on the highway.

2) Chase down a 350 Holley (and a redline or cain manifold if possible). Some people swear by them, others curse their existance because they have run them in less than ideal specs. Properly sorted, they will far outperform, and give similar economy to Weber's and Variajets. Get one in poor to reasonable condition ($50) and put a rebuild kit through it ($95). Remember that these carbies were designed for 250ish cube motors, so you need to play around with the jetting until you are happy with the balance of outright performance and city driving manners.

3) Shop around for a 30/70ish cam second hand. I got one for $50 unused with lifters. I also fitted heavier valvesprings ($50) and crane rockers ($180 s/hand and unused) at this point, although these are more of a reliability issue.

4) If you are running a blue or black motor, get the head lightly ported and replace valves if need be. Replace the head gasket while you're at it. If a red motor, get a blue or black head, as well as the later electronic HEI.

5) Hand over your dizzy and the above engine specs to an auto leccy and get him to regraph it. Won't improve performance a whole lot, but it cut my fuel consumption by 1L/100km and only cos about $50!

6) Get someone to tune and time it properly. Once again, not a big performance enhancer but shows in the long term consumption!

After doing the above to my HQ, she goes more than fast enough to do something stupid, returns 11L/100km on the highway, 13 around town and has no trouble lighting up a pair of 265 bags with a 3.36 diff.

thanks for the advice Tonner. I should have extractors and the hollie hopefully by the end of this week. Getting them for practically nothing, hollie is meant to be in good nick just got to put a carb kit in it. I think I am going to hold off on putting it on till i get some rust touched up, cause before I can put the extractors on I need a new exhaust (hangs to lowe to the ground) but anyways, I'll let yas know how it goes for sure
