in s2 onwards they had a plastic funnel type thing lol to smooth out the idle. it was just after the throttle body. most ppl take em out as they can be restrictive.

i removed the bellmouth on my vr, it made a high pitched noise for a while but then i realised that i forgot to tighten up one of the nuts on the throttle body (stupid me) lol, but after i tightened it back up, the noise went away.

i didnt seem to notice much difference in take off, it sounds alot rougher though

It seems to me that removing the bellmouth isn't the smartest thing to do. It's there to smooth out the idle, sure, but it evenly disperses the air/fuel mixture to all 6 cylinders.

I haven't done it myself, so I can't confirm or deny the effectiveness of removing it but I would think that it would lead to uneven wear in the block.

If an the mixture is being unevenly dispersed, that makes me think there may even be a loss of power - but if the bellmouth is as restrictive as some say, on balance it may be a good move. Just my two cents.
