Default EFI problems, can someone help?

hi, i have a 202EFI in a VK wagon,
recently it has started playing up on me. whenever i first start driving it round it is really sluggish, and after a few seconds of keeping the accel open the a consistent amount, it suddenly gets a rush and takes off.. also around the 80-90 km/hr mark it suddenly loses all power, starts to die and the engine sounds kinda like a subaru (not running on all cylinders??)

its a bit of a problem coz it always happens to me when i am driving to work and to uni, and i have to stop, pull over and turn the car off.. start it again and keep revving until the problem slowly goes away. any suggestions would be welcome rather than having a total stab in the dark or getting someone to charge me heaps for it.

thanks in advance

The VK EFI system is very simple - get hold of a workshop manual and a multimeter, the manual will tell you a number of tests you can do with the multimeter that will pinpoint problems with different components. I have one here if you get stuck.

ok, cool i might do that. we have been racking our brain and tried a few different things on it. i have heard the airflow meters in the air intake can cause issues, could it cause this kind of problem in the car??

im hoping i can sort it out nice and quick coz i want to sell it soon, but id rather sell it running properly

The air flow meter is often a cause of problems, could also be a number of other things though including just a dodgy wiring connection.

did these have the vane style AFM?

a can of carby cleaner on the sensors and AFM works wonders as basic maintenance, unless somethings a bit second hand on most EFI systems

ill give that a shot too. ive had it for over a year and its only been happening for about 2-3 months, progressively getting worse, so it could be the sort of thing you guys discussed..

The workshop manual tells you how to check the fuel pressure too...
