Default 186 engine;

Spent the day helping EH 179 assemble his 186 engine. This will run a Crow solid cam. What we found is, the lifters have a lower pushrod cup, and using the 186 pushrods allows the roller rocker to foul on the rocker post. (stud mount). I've been told you can machine the rocker body for clearance but would prefer not to.
Tried 179 pushrods next and they provided enough clearance after setting rough lash, but havn't checked full rocker/valve geometry yet.
Does anyone know for sure which way to go here.

Allports? Others? comments please?

186 and 179 standard length pushrods are the same.

you might want to blue the valve tips with the 179 pushrods you have and see where the contact patch is

Thats what we thought too Wabbit, but somewhere along the way these 179 pushrods have grown 3mm longer.
Havn't got that far yet but will be checking the contact patch and overall rocker geometry.

Machine the rocker if you dont and it locks on the stud it will damage the cam and more.
I dont think there is another way unless you get a smaller cam.

cut an old pushrod in half and drill/tap it for threaded rod. Then keep tweaking the lenght till you get the right valve patch.

Crow will make a nice custom length pronto. Or dig out the workshop manuals until you find a factory one thatll fit.

If there yella terra arms and they need machining, they will do it for you and you keep the warrenty.

Thanks for the tips mate, will do some headscratchin' overnight.
Looks like machining the rocker is the way to go at this stage.
The 3mm longer pushrods from the "standard" 179 look promising though, but wont know for sure until contact patch and geometry checks done.

Grind to gain the clearance.

OK, so grinding the rockers is the go, but i can't stop thinking why the 179 p/rods are 3mm longer.

The 186 must have 202 p/rods previously. Will measure in the morn'.

Hmmm

is the head/rocker assembly off the 179, by any chance?

the reason I ask, is that I just realised that you would have pushrod guides, so you'd need longer pushrods to allow for the higher rocker height.
the pushrods in the 179 were the correct length for the head/rocker/guide plate assembly, perhaps?

or am I on the wrong track, altogether?

Wabbit, i think you may be on the right track.
Not knowing the history of the engine, there is a good chance the previos owner/builder had a machined head and HYD lifters, allowing them to use the shorter p/rods. Will follow up that one today.

Just as i thought! The 186 was supplied with 202 p/rods measured exactly 9" (thanks, Allports)
The 179 p/rods being a bit longer are the goods and alls well.
Thanks for input guys. (i like 308s better)
