hey
i'm looking at putting a 202 in a tonner, it is my first project so im not looking at doing too much to it, just getting it to run nicely. i'm looking for some advice on which colour 202 would be the best to put in it and i don't know much about gearboxes so what gear box to go with it (i'm thinking blue 202 and maybe m20?). it will just be for every day use and be under p plates so i can't do anything too obvious. |

Sure why not?

An injected V6 or V8 would be more powerful and cheaper to run, and quite an easy swap. But - in comparison the 202 is vastly simpler again, and much cheaper to buy and install so I think you're on the right track with this. If you're not concerned about power then it doesn't matter whether red or blue either, better off shopping around for one that's complete and in good nick so you don't have to spend any money on it. Yes M20 would be the choice for manual gearbox for the 202. If you plan to spend any significant money on it or do a lot more to it later then consider BossHoggett's suggestion.

a later engine as the guys mentioned would be good
but as a P plater you will have insurance hassles so the 202 and 4 speed would be the go a blue 202 and M20 (Aussie NOT Phillipines) will be a cheap setup hth Smitty |

You can always chuck it on LPG... Wonder which would be cheaper to run then? I get about 430k's from 80ltr LPG tank in my EH Prem, $45 bucks to fill... On the plus side it'll help you in the long run with being able to save money easier and do better things for your build.
I reckon you should think about getting a Celica 5 speed from a wreckers or something too, they sh!t all over the Aussie 'boxes.. They are a much better shifter.

id stick with the 202 and m20 box mate...
that way you wont have any dramas from insurence. id prob go with a blue or black 202 and tuned right you can get decent km to a tank. plus they are easy to work on engines and you can do all the work yourself... only thing i would change is the ignition. go to electronic |

Up to you strongy. 4 speed is good if you wonna drop skids all day cos they're tough as f**k. Celica box is just easier to live with, more user friendly. Like you said, you want to get it running nicely for now. There's couple of mods to do but its well worth it.

Toast the Aussie 4 speed can stand a bit of abuse from a six, but you can't exactly thrash it without expecting problems. On the other hand, I'd say a well set up 4 speed has a much nicer shift than a Toyota box so I disagree on all points.
strongy sounds like your best bet is to stick with the tried and true 202 and 4 speed. It'll be both easy and cheap. |

Strongy, if you don't mind being under the car every couple of months tightening linkages n stuffing around, then the Aussie box is it. I've had both and the 5 speed is better and will be good enough for what you want it to do, for now. And don't listen to the people who say that the Celica box is a weak piece of sh!t, they don't know what they're on about... Plenty of blokes use them.
