Default Coolant pouring out on my feet when driving

Hi Guys, as i said went to drop the missus at the shoptoday and when i put the heater on all coolant came out from the back of the cd player onto my feet and I mean a litre so i turned the heater off and when i whent to pick her up the same thing happened! Ive recently had the dash out as there was smoke coming out of the vents when driving and it smelt like burning plus when ive been driving the window fogs up from heat coming from under the dash through the vents! Am i Right in thinking the heater box is cracked or a hose is loose or cracked?

Yes, seems very much like it. There's no other way that coolant can get into the interior like that (that is from behind the dashboard.) It's best to fix it right away. I once saw a car with the same trouble, and all the coolant just flooded the whole floor. There were two huge puddles!

i take it its in the commo? the heater core is probably knackered (common fault with the commodore) two options; bypass the heater core or pull your dash to pieces and replace it ( btw, heaters are sooo overated!!!!!!)

It is the heater core. Remember putting coolant in a UC Torana for the first time as it had been run for over 25 years on water. Got about 3mins down the road and coolant everywhere! Pulled one out of U pull it and now it is all good

Pity you don't drive an old Galaxie, replacing the heater core takes all of about 2 minutes

I had to do it once in my Camira, if I recall correctly, I resorted to the hacksaw method at one stage.

Thanks guys, i saw a bloke i know yesterday and asked if he still had his vl and he said he'd got a yellow licky on it so its sitting in a paddock ready to be wrecked. ill go rip his out one day during the week and try to fix it this weekend.

I take it a pressure test on the replacement unit would be as easy as putting a hose in the inlet and my finger in the outlet then slowly let pressure out of the hose till i can fell it on the outlet then check if it leaks anywhere?

Make sure before you pull the VL one out that it's the same as yours. There are quite a few different styles of heater in early Commodores. Don't know why but there are.

Its all fixed up now, took a day to do it all up id say plus having other problems with hooking all the little suction hoses up as all the number tags have fallen off lol. The cheapest price i got for a new core was 160 from natrad but ross at ross's radiators fixed the old one up for 60 bucks, dropped it of to him at 10:30 in the morn and had it back by 3 in the arvo, exellent turn around and service (by the way it was the core with the heater hose facing down as there were 2 bought out in the vl model.

Still cant seem to get the air to come out the top of the dash for demisting though. Im definatly going to pull the one out of my vh project and get a new one just for peice of mind as its abit older then this one that just went and from the sounds of it the coolant brings out the leaks in them and it only had water in it before.

With running a ADC burnout king ill be putting Tecalloy extra gold in it like the vl and my dirt bike have in them, cost 30 bucks a litre and treats 15 litres of water but with my bike i had to mix it 1:1 as the alloy is of very high quality on the barrel and head.
