Gday, im in year 12 and i've got an old HQ ute. It's got no engine or gear box in her but for starters im lookin at a 202 straight six we got lyin around and an aussie 4 speed. Now i've heard from a lot of people that the 186 is better than a 202, and I've also been told that the only difference is the stroke not the bore so you could put 186 bits in a 202? whats your opinions on it? Is it worth keepin the 202 or makin good 186. any help will be appreciated
BTW i do know this is a V8 site but I cant get my hands on a V* yet lol Last edited by Jeza; 20-05-2008 at 12:46 PM. Reason: extra info |

mate
stick with the 202 and aussie to start with good simple and cheap oh and cubes count...which is why the 202 is the go and Holden thought so too for the 'Q ![]() |

I got my first HQ 202 in 1980. and i thought they were a unreliable rubbish motor even in std form, from all the stories i heard about them dropping valves burning valves and doing big ends. so i had 173 motor was on hand. i thrashed the day lights out the 202 and could not blow it up. sold it with 98000 miles up. motor was spot on. i think it just comes down it servicing them. i seen a lot wombats drive around with a boggy radiator and don't change the oil & plugs, back then. plus there are more 202 motors in aus than any other.

without knowing what ratio the diff is, it's a bit hard to tell
but, I've driven basically stock 202s with Aussie 4 speeds and 3.08 diffs and they're fine. your intended application is important, too. highway/urban/drags/etc

a ford crank in a Holden block will give you about 220-230ci depending problem is nowadays finding someone who knows it its NOT a drop in/bolt in..it requires some machining and the balance job is a bugger hth Smitty |

Yep, good thing i got a red, what ford crank can be used 2 stroke a 202?I'll see if i can get a hold of one
edit: I just found a site called prostroke that does a 234 conversion, but i cant afford 2-5 grand lol. Might go for the cheap approach Last edited by Jeza; 24-05-2008 at 04:57 PM. |

ford 221 crank can be used, good speedway trick, but if u havnt got 2 - 5 grand to spend its not worth doing because it will cost u near on that.
my boss did the 221 crank into a 202 to make it 236ci, he had the crank cut in half, reversed, machined and balanced. its a prick of a job for a good machinist so... i wouldnt really call it the cheap approach. just stick with the 202, chuck a 350 holley on it and sum extractors and an exhaust and shell give ya years of fun, specially in a ute. cheers, Davo.

Kit Cullen in QLD makes stroker cranks for them PM me for his Ph# his crank looks like a counterweighted blue/black crank.
The 221 crank req a lot of work and $. Plus you need a Ford 250 piston and too many fraud parts are a drama. Lol.

hehe thanx davo and allports. i was just looking at my engine today. We painted over the red in blue, but then realised that it had 3.3 written on the block (202ci) so seeing as its a metric and not imperial measurement like 3.3 l instead on 202 ci, could this originally have been a blue engine?
