Question modifying my 186

Yer I'm getting bored with my LJ torana atm. In the meantime I drive it until I take it off the road to put a blown 454 in it an make it a drag car ($$$$!!!). As I am very amateur but am handy with the spanner, for this year I was wondering what else I could do with the stock 186 to make it have a bit more kick. I got the extractor and exhaust all sweet (pacemaker tri-y sports etc), maybe a better cam? Dunno much about them, maybe even supercharging? I'd have about $2000 to use anyway so I guess supercharger is out of the question?? The engine is tough, but has done a bit of travelling. Triple carbies maybe? Any ideas for quick bang for buck and something to do for me to learn a few things?

Twin stromberg carbs on it would be the best, cheap way, to help it get a wriggle on.

go a set of 1 3/4 triples with an xu1 spec cam and a bit of a port job on the head. should nearly be doable on your budget.

Single wet Nozzle fogger 50 HP Cheapest.

T6 Pistons, full Engine balance.
Nitrous grind cam, 5500 MAX rpm (standard rods)
Standard rods WITH decent bolts.
felpro head Gasket.
Electronic Dizzy
350 Holley and 75HP Nos (witch is just a pill size upgrade 20 bucks) approx 220-230 real HP

Cheaper rego. Flogs Cammed up V8's (power to weight ratio)
and transferable to your next car.

AGAINST : the bastard stuff costs $80 odd bucks to refill......Mind you 75hp kit will last along time in a 13 or 15 lbs bottle.

and i think youll almost be scrapping the very bottom of a 2000 budget probably $2500 and that cutting corners. $5000 if you want to recon the motor.

Now considering all the bullshite that ive gone through with red motors and getting good blocks these days, go and buy a wrecked VN v6 and a conversion kit from Castlemaine. and that will consume your 2000 budget and be more ecconomical and stick it to Cammed HQ's every day.... and you havent opened the engine.

Ask any bloke whos hotted a car up !!!! if its your daily driver your wasting your time unless you can use your mums festiva. as it will never get finished.

Hi

u have three options on pistons for supercharging if you go with the stroker option 186-235 they can use custom arias to reduce compression, or acl duralights/hq racing pistons but you have to use a decompression plate which is required with a crs/hadfield blower, another option is custom ross pistons these bring comp to 7:5 or something like that without the decompression plate, ask ACL and they give you a sheet for the ross pistons to send away(usa). Blue engine is good for the crank and rods, maybe get them cleaned up shotpeened, heat treated, bored to 208 ect
If you got the money, yella terra sells new heads that are low compression, or get a 2ndhand one of ebay not a high comp normal or low is good tho the old low comp heads are very rare. Blowers- Crs(hadfield), 4/71gm (carby out of bonnet tho), any centrifugal blower with custom mounts, belts and blow through carb, or a old wade blower some of these can fit under bonnet and look similar to a 4/71 but sidedrught carbs can be used which sit about rocker cover.Im getting a 202 with whipple charger that achieves full boost with a tap of the accerator but $10000

FOR around $500 i can get hypernemtic pistons for 202 supercharger(id say alot better than the ACL,also gaskets for the boost(extra)

ACL rebuild kits:$500rings,bearingsect
ACL pistons:$300-$600with rings,pins
Stroker and arias:$2000-$5000short engine(no head)
YT HEAD:$ 800blank $1300 ready to go $500 of ebay(420hp with yt stg4 head with supercharer port
CRS blower:$1800- full kit, blowers are of toyota these only have 3months warranty as they are second hand but fulley tested 50%power gain on stock
ROSS pistons:$1400, these are what im using with the whipple can& withstand 420hp no worries

Thanks heaps for the help guys, much appreciated and will have to read over these posts properly. I just got a dual carby setup and will be fitting them soon. I have decided to get another 186 and completely recon that in my garage and possibly supercharge so I can drop it in later on or when my old engine dies a bit. I will keep you posted and do a lotta research in the meantime. Cheers!
