You really need a puller (e.g. balancer puller works fine), otherwise you'll get nowhere fast

do yourself a favour, get a steering wheel puller, they r available from pretty much anywhere that sells auto parts or tools and r worth about $10. a balancer puller will work ok too but for the sake of ten bucks why not have the tool that does the job properly? whatever u do, dont do the old undo the nut nearly to the end and hit the shaft with a hammer while pulling on the wheel trick, it can work but more often than not u end up with a damaged thread.

ive always got steering wheels off with the "undo nut till nearly at end of thread trick" but never used a hammer.
sit in the drivers seat and yank on it as hard as you can using shoulder and upperbody strength to get it off (make sure the nut is still on the thread at least 2 or 3 threads or so and dont take it off completely like i seen an apprentice at lane ford do hahahaha, 1 broken nose and alot of blood on the customers car lol). if just doing that doesnt work start hitting either side of the wheel with your palm and it will almost definitley get loose, and havnt seen a damaged thread yet, but i reckon if you used a hammer on it youd run the risk haha.
