Default XF falcon dual fuel issue

greetings everyone,

i picked up my newest paddock basher today, an XF falcon 6cyl. it goes, it stops, it turns so it passes my saftey cheks for the paddock 'chewi'

my main concern is it's dual fuel system, the gas runs well but it doesnt like petrol...i mean realy doesnt like petrol, it smokes, it misses and i cant get it to idle. i took a quick look at it this arvo but i wanted some opinions of people who know these carbys and engines, im thinking of going straight petrol as gas is not easily aquired on a car that can-not legaly go to the station to fuel up (unless anyone knows of a good way im all ears and happy to go straight gas)

ive been told that gas requires a ton of advance on the dizzy (12 deg if memory serves me well) but i dont think its just timimg because its running badly throughout the rev-range.

ill get some fresh petrol and give it another go as the previous owner never used petrol.

Clean the carb out and give it a check over, they tend to get neglected when running on gas (doesn't see fuel in the jets or anything while running gas).

I agree entirely but I'd also check the fuel pump and change the fuel filter as well as fresh petrol.

If you go straight petrol, check the initial timing advance, plug gap and leads.

i had the same problem ages back on my XE duel fuel, turned out the carb needed a rebuild since it was never run on petrol everything dried up but like others suggested cheapest option first would be fuel filter fresh fuel and see what happens

ive tried getting in there but the gas converter is fitted into the air drum and that is fastened down with anti-tamper screws that have quite odd heads on them, ive got to drill them out or something in order to get at the carb. i might even just attack it with an angle grinder and replace it with an open-air elemet. i dont have any worries about stripping the carb down, ive successfully rebuilt 3 diffrent holleys so i should be able to figure out this one hopefully.

wreckers sell carbs for approx 20 fixed my issues and gas destroys plugs and leads although they look new they are usually ruined internally
