Ok guys, I have about $1000 to spare on an exhaust system for my stock 186 red engine torana (it'll probably be worth nore than the car itself!!). Apparently I heard I should have extractors possibly Pacemaker or Genie- ceramic coated? but dunno about tuned or interference or anything else. Just want a real mean grunt out of this engine coming down the road. Only setback is also I want the dual pipes out either side of the rear for show; I guess that can be easily done with a Y-connection and some welding towards the end of the system? Any ideas on diameters and what else in the system to make a mean roar with power? I think really I should only go 2" to 2.5" with these 6 cyls obviously? I got one week for advice guys, so help me out here if you can please!!!!

2 to 2 1/4" sounds good. I wouldn't go any larger than that, and I'd lean towards the 2" if you plan on keeping it stock.
HPC coated extracters would be good, but is the cost justified for a stock engine? not in my books, but whatever floats your boat. it's your car. muffler selection is the key to the sound of your system. you really need to decide on what sound you want. I'm not a fan of the sound of turbo mufflers, but many others are. I'd go for a decent sports muffler and a hotdog. that should give you a fair note without being too loud

Yer, I just thought I'd like to get this piece of sh*t sounding pretty damn awesome with a lotta grunt without sacrifice of power. Basically i'm gonna have this engine a few years till i condition a 350 and strip the car completely etc. So yer, thanx for the advice, wouldn't a turbo muffler sound like a fart going down the road on my 186 lol?!? However, I do kinda want this thing to be heard coming down the street from a mile away instead of putting the v8 in too early.

many moons ago a mate had a lx, 186 trimatic with extractors and twin 2inch pipes with 2x super turbo mufflers, sounded sweet as!
where the extractors went to two pipes they were cut off so it didnt go to one, so each pipe was for 3cyl each. the 186 had a heap of work and rumbled real nice however when he gave it some stick it was loud! |

Sweet that's exactly what I'm lookin for!! I'm going in to the place next wed to plan it; I'm getting pacemaker tuned (f*ck the ceramic coating as it is $250 more....yer right...) with the rest i dunno, split into twin out each side. People said the turbo exhausts are pretty loud; i heard hotdogs also? But i dunno much in that area...How good are Remus mufflers? And i'll chat with the guys about that issue, i was thinkin strait off extractor to cat(?) then single tube with y split to two outlets either side with muffflers that are LOUD hopefully. I guess the cops won't be happy...Thanx again for the advice. My avatar has custom plates too guys, if anyone likes them, make an offer........But I need lotsa ideas and replies before wed, plz help me out as I got plenty $$$ for custom exhaust!!

righto, first up, I think you're confused with what turbo mufflers are.
Except for some manufacturers, they are a triple flow muffler where the gasses make 2 turns before exiting. is that clear to you? I'm crap at explaining stuff without pictures. the 6cyl VK I have at the moment had a new 2.5" system with a single sports muffler and it was too loud for me. Legally it was okay, but it had a horrible blaaaaat noise on acceleration and a disgusting drone at 100kph. actually anywhere from 80kph to 130kph. I put a 14" hotdog on that dropped the noise levels by 4 decibels. I also gutted an old resonator that I had here and tried that with the open 4" can to simulate those stupid ****ing cannon exhausts. it increased the sound by 5 decibels........still sounded better than a WRX with a cannon, though I rebuilt the resonator and wacked it on the rear and reduced the sound by another 3 decibels, but with a nasty, low pitched sound at idle that I put down to the chamber that I made and put at the rear of the resonator. the major issue here was the pipe size and, since the car isn't regod yet, I haven't had a chance to get the car out on the highway to see if it's been fixed. all DB readings were taken at 2400rpm. if you're using a twin system on a stock or near stock engine, I'd put the split into 2 pipes back near the diff. it's all a personal thing. the exhaust on the VK was legal, but annoyed the crap out of me and I only drove it 40k. it doesn't sound any different to me from outside the car, but the DB meter says otherwise.....time will tell

Thanx for the advice; The twin spilt was def going to start close to the rear. Yer I read up on the turbo mufflers last nite, noticed they do a few turns in them and stuff. Another guy recommended a semi- straight through muffler or something, i got some people to build me this stuff anyway, and i'll let u guys know how it goes. Cheers!

Yer taking it in on mon to get: pacemaker extractors tri-y (tuned useless as it's not quite racing material), out to spilt y with twin mufflers and probably 6" tips or some sh*t from the exit from the mufflers. I was offered to get dual tubes run from the extractor to make it ready for my 350, but it would significantly make a difference on performance for the 186 apparently. So I chose to split it near the rear as I don't know how well i'm gonna do with getting the 350 in it later. Thanks guys for the help!
