Hey Knute , we just done the conversion in my mates HQ GTS with a 383 chev, the engine made 514 HP on dyno and the trimatic is a good conversion.
If you are pushing more power than 550 + HP that then i would look at a powerglide or a turbo box.
We used a bellhousing housing adapter and the Full manual trimatic with TCE converter and bellhousing were supplied by Hugo @ RACEGLIDES Australia. 9338-1000. Give him a call if you want any advice.
